Anyone's parents/grandparents used to whitewash the trees?

I remember my grandparents used to have all the trees in the front yard whitewashed. My dad said growing up they'd repaint them each year.

If new neighborhoods had trees this could totally make a comeback

Yeah, I wouldn't count trashy out either. I'm getting a real Mississippi vibe here.

I never understood the use of this. Someone told me it was to reduce pests but I'm not sure I believe that.

People do that to their citrus trees out here every year. Supposed to protect the tree from sunscald.

The trees at our camp used to look like that but someone got lazy and stopped. But seeing that definitely takes me back to childhood weekends at the camp.

I was told it stopped the squirrels from getting in the trees. Was always skeptical.

It's not trashy just old timey. I remember a lot of places did this.

Back then everyone had the white shells for a driveway if they didn't have concrete. They came from Lake Pontchartrain before they made them stop dredging.

I remember seeing it, didn't know anyone that did it. It does bring back memories though.

How ironic to perform a lynch on a "white" washed tree...

The paint didn't but I know some folks that would put thin sheet metal around the trunks of their pecan trees to keep squirrels from climbing them.
