does this mean making others fail is masculine?

Just that? Not 'drinking others' milkshakes and stealing their oil, or beating someone to death with a bowling pin?

I mean yeah, the bowling pin was a bit much but your boy was a conniving con artist and unlikable himself. By that time he was kind of off his rocker so I chalk it up to be a demented old man.

I'll restate what I said and say up until that part he was fairly relatable

The milkshake stuff doesn't bother me. He's not "stealing" anyone's oil, that's how oil drilling works.

Grown men with hair on their balls don’t have a favorite superhero or a favorite Brad Pitt movie.

Day's character is somewhat relatable until he starts acting like a dick to his son (not real son but still).
Acting like a dick? He's revealed to be a sociopath/psycho path with zero actual feeling for this other human.

Daniel Plainview's character.

I like DDL, but this seemed a bit like his "Gangs of New YourK" character.

He i9s a misanthrope but I do like when he tell the kid he has already drained his land of all it oil. Killing him was a bit much.

If I remember, it was based on a real life person in the early days of the oil business.

There are several instances throughout the movie that show he had some feelings towards his son beyond what he states at the end. He's also shown to be very insecure about it.

He also protects the little girl (his son's future wife) from her abusive dad early in the movie.

Again, I think by the end of the movie he's a demented psychopath but he certainly had some redeeming qualities early on.

The character of Paul Sunday was created to parallel Daniel Plainview, both driven, immoral characters who used each other throughout the movie.
