Apparently this is now getting some traction in the media:

We sent them an email through the website but I seriously doubt that does anything. Sent them the policy number and told them we never had a lapse in coverage but I am sure we have to probably go up there and bring in a copy of the policy or some bull shite. The date of the insurance change matches exactly the date they say my husbands insurance lapsed. So is this something that every single person who ever changed insurance is dealing with? That seems insane but this whole thing is insane, so...

Wait.. You can't collect debt from 1986 in any state. Yea the debt still techinally exists. It's just meaningless.. You can't report that or validate that. Not sending a letter certified is stupid. You can't fine someone for not responding to a letter you can't prove was received. I forsee some class action suits over this.
Send letter to validate the debt and a cease and desist.

, the cost of at least $500,000 to send 1.2 million letters was justified.
So these pieces of human garbage just spent half a million dollars to shake down residents for made up infractions.
I hope whichever legislator made this nonsense up is slowly eaten by a family of bears.

That would be one Rep. Barry Ivey, R-Baton Rouge

To everyone who is receiving notices at their parents' house, I would suggest you tell your parents not to sign for any registered or certified packages that are sent in your name to that old address. In case the ODR makes that the next step to try to prove notice.

Some drivers, he said, knowingly allow their auto insurance to expire and continue to drive in Louisiana, which isn’t allowed

"Due to a high call volume we cannot take your call at this time". How in the h*ll are we supposed to pay? They expect everyone to go to the DMV? What a disaster

It is ridiculous. And you only have 60 days to get a call placed AND figure out how to settle it before you get charged $600 and if I understand correctly they are charging the late-fees or failure to reply to notice fees regardless of whether you actually broke the law. That is what seems to infuriating to me.

I wonder if any dead people received letters.

I guarantee my mom (deceased) got a letter. myself as well. Haven't lived in LA since 2011. The letters are likely going to our old house in BR. I didn't even know it was a law to turn that stuff in. Whatever.

The articles I've read piss me off even more. They make it sound like it's an honest attempt to collect what is rightfully the states, like a business that sells to a customer and the customer didn't pay.
I turned in my plates when I left the POS state, never let my Insuance lapse, and still have to pay a fine because it's suppsedly a second notice. All because some incompetent person at the dmv didn't record the license plate turnover.

I got three for my son yesterday, he has had a few vehicles and probably got behind on his insurance payment once or twice over the last few years.
Are these fines legit ?

so my BIL got one of these letters yesterday
it was sent to my house and he hasn't lived in my house in 4 years
he moved to Texas
should I just ignore this letter so he can claim ignorance? right "wrong address" and put it back in the mailbox?

He met a woman in tears who was there with her sons death certificate. Died in a car wreck. Either a "lapse in coverage" for a dead person or they neglected to send in the plates from the charred wreckage.
Dude in the article is lying BTW. It is $128 fine at a minimum b/c you didn't respond to the "first notice" and they can garnish your federal tax refund.

quote:his federal tax refund will be garnished to the tune of $576. He can argue it down to $128 if he's able to get in touch with anyone.

If my dad weren't retired there's no way I could handle this from out of state.
