Our dog used to use mats when he was young. Then as he got older he would go out before and after we went to work. Now that he is really old (14 years old) he can’t hold it anymore. I am wondering if anyone has had success teaching an old dog to start using a pad again? Any ideas how we could handle this besides the obvious of coming home during the day or shooting him? Thanks.

Put puppy pads everywhere. The more of the floor you cover with puppy pads, the less likely he is to piss on the floor.

Take him out "a lot". praise when they do their business. Take potty pad outside with him if he uses it. Show it that piss and poop goes outside.

He knows piss and poop go outside because let’s us know when he needs to go out when we are home. He just physically can’t hold it all day anymore.

Put down lots of pads. He will get used to using the pads in a certain spot. Then you can probably just put 2 or 3 out.

My mom gets her dog to go on potty pads in the garage when it’s raining. She sprays some kind of scent on the pads. He uses them but he hates it. He’s one of those handstand pissers.

What does the spray do and why is it called?

Search potty pad attractant or training spray on amazon. She uses Natures Miracle. She said she doesn’t have to use it all the time. Doesn’t smell too good.

Gate off an area and put a large tarp down. Put scented “go here” mats in the area you’d like the dog to use. He might catch on. If not, you have the tarp.

I would put him in a very large (plenty of room) crate with a puppy pad on one side as he will have accidents in his old age and won't have to struggle or worry about where to pee.

I recently moved from a house with a yard to an apartment. I bought the pooch pad thing with the fake grass and my 7 year old lab took to it like it was real grass. I use the disposable pads underneath the grass and not the reusable pad that comes with the though.

Thanks for that. I will look into it.

Call me what you will but after 14 years I cannot bring myself to crate him. I will clean up pee before I do this.

Thanks all, but keep them coming if you have any suggestions.

Pooch potty is the way to go. I use regular disposable and I have to change them after he goes. It comes with a spray that eliminates the odor in the fake grass but I still have to wash the fake grass with a hose and dawn dish soap once a week

Time to start kenneling him when you are gone. Did you have a Vet check?

I hope you get many more years with your boy. Mine is 8.5 and showing signs of dementia... I can only hope and pray I get 5-6 more years with him
