I asked my cousin one time if his dad was a member of the mafia.
Large Ohio city, president of the local Teamsters, Italian, owned a private social club (his mother was the cook)where men could play cards and have a nice meal.
His reply, "You know we lived in an immigrant neighborhood, middle class, second/third generation Italian/Polish".
"My father had to settle a lot of disputes". "Phone call in the middle of the night, a wife is getting beat up by her husband". "My mother could never sleep after those phone calls"." He would take his handgun out of the nightstand and tell her...Love you, I'll be back before breakfast".
An employed drunk, is better than someone sentenced to 30/60/90 days. That's why the police were never called, they called my Uncle.

I met Carlos Marcello once. He seemed like a nice man. Said he was in the tomato business as I recall.

I had a pledge brother who was Italian and we all had suspicions he had connections with the mob.

I went in disguise so you couldn't recognize me.
If I have to whack you, I want it to be out of the blue for you so you never see it coming and don't suffer.
It'll be like turning off the light switch the click of the hammer hitting the cap will be the last thing you hear before you sleep.

Next time you are in Barnes and Noble pick up a copy of Mr New Orleans by Frenchy Brouillette, its in the "Local" section.
Gives a great laydown of the underworld in NO.
French Brouillette is the subject of the book, but I'm not sure he was the primary author, although he contributed to it (I believe). I went to high school with the guy who wrote it. Strange guy, but really smart.

Some mafia hardass by the last name of Grotti moonlighting as an insurance salesman came into the company I manage and tried to strongarm me into signing off on a contract/protection money. He took me to lunch at an Italian place to persuade me but ultimately I stared him and the mob down and said no way and told him to take his business elsewhere.

Had a g/f whose dad was. Never net him as he was in a different state. But most of the time we went somewhere, someone or two followed us at a little distance.
