A friend of mine was going through a terrible custody battle and used one. He absolutely wrecked his ex with the information the PI obtained. They can be very valuable depending on what your uses are.

Do they keep a low profile in general?
In other words, do they try, if possible, to not go around letting people know they are a PI?

Yeah: I hired one of the best ones in my city to see if they could find anything on me when I was required to get some professional licenses. Any arrest whatsoever could disqualify you so I paid them to try and find me. I had a couple of "incidents" in my past. Luckily nothing came up.
A buddy of mine hired one to document what his slut wife was up to when he was in process of divorcing her.

Yes. The PI was hired by him and would report back with any information he found that could be used against her. He then passed it along to his attorney. The PI was a former cop I think.

I used one in Houston for a case. Solid work and he found an illegal in a few months that we were looking for for about 2 years
