Looking at possibly taking a contract job with Boeing in Kuwait within the next couple months. Any advice? Recommendations?

Worked with a dude who spent about six months there. He was absolutely bored as frick, but did get out of there a lot for side trips.

One of my best friends growing up is part of the royal family. For some reason, they NEVER live in their own country - always Spain, UK, France and the US. Never understood that.
Enjoy the desert sun brah

Good friend's parents lives there right now working for his company. He doesn't seem to mind it very much, wife hates it though.

I'm leaving the wife and kids back here in the states. Plan on only staying for a year.

I've been through there 11 times from anywhere to 2 days, up to a few months, as a Marine and later a civilian. Bring an external and a laptop full of shite to do. Also, they better be paying well because Kuwait is boring and hot as hell.
Have you ever done contract work for the government/military before?

Have good life insurance to leave for your family

I've visited a few times but then only for brief periods and never more than a two night stay. I find it less westernized than Dubai or Doha, but the city center is modern and has a good working infrastructure. Confirm where you will stay and do some research on the area. My bet is you can handle it for that long plus apparently the money makes it worth you and your family suffering from the separation. Do as someone suggested make plans for lots of trips elsewhere.
My last visit was a day trip from Dubai with return the same day. I met with some guys away from Kuwait City in an industrial section and felt like I was on the set of The Hurt Locker.

A week at Ali Al Salem Air Base going to and then home from Afghanistan was enough for me, it's humid and hot as hell.

I have not done contract work before. I've been a DOD civilian for 10 years and 4 years active duty before that. The pay is pretty good which is the reason I'm considering it.

OK, then you probably know contractors are at the low end of treatment out there. I don't know what pretty good is, but I racked up 7 figures during my time over there. Worth it, but I don't think I'd do it again.

I would be making double what I'm making now and would be debt free (minus mortgage) when I get back. I have a good friend there right now that's painting sunshine and roses because he wants me to come work over there but I wanted to get some unbiased opinions. Thanks for the info!

It might be different for you if you're single, but being married and being gone years at a time isn't much fun. Other than significant boredom and the heat, it really isn't too bad. The money was worth both of those negatives.

Where are you going? Ali Al Salem?

Spent 6 months there last year. Hot, muggy and sandy but not too bad. I am married with kids and you can Skype often because the time difference isn't bad. If you are living on a military installation like Ali or Arifjan there is enough to do to keep you occupied. I am considering going back when I retire.

I spent 6 months at Camp Arifjan and Kuwait Naval Base. The humidity was pretty bad. It was definitely hot, but the humidity was terrible. Kuwait City is pretty nice, and fairly westernized. Be careful on the roads. Wildest group of drivers I've ever been around.

What Chili Davis said.
Oh, there aren't any trees. Just blue plastic bags.
