I live in Savannah and we go to Tybee island nearly every weekend. I am noticing more and more people kite surfing. There were ten on the end of the beach we were at on Saturday. I know it is not but they make it look easy. When they go down they are back up within seconds. Looks really fun.

So a few question for those that kite surf. How much does a set up cost? How hard is to learn as in how long does it take for the average person to get where they can get up and go on sustained rides? Approximately how fast are you moving on a fairly windy day? They look to be going pretty fast.

It's pretty expensive, pretty demanding and quite dangerous.

Expensive. I want to say around $1,000-1,500 for a basic setup.

It’s no more dangerous than anything on the water, IMO. Learning to kite surf is 90% learning to control the kite (your power).

Definitely get hooked up with a local company that does lessons. I’d go that route once or twice before you jump all in. It’s a blast but learning how to maneuver the kite is the key.

They chummed the water to get that picture. Everyone knows that sharks love snapper.

You can learn the basics in a day. Now if you want to get really good it's going to take several lessons. It's not easy, especially when winds are strong and when you're near a shoreline with waves breaking

Kites: $1,000 to $2,000 per kite for brand new. You really need three kites around here. If you are a 180 pound man I would go with 14, 11 and 8 square meters.

You also need:

Control bar $150
Harness $100
Twin Tip Board $400
Wet Suit for winter ???
Safety Vest for impact protection and a little flotation

You can get by with one kite. If so, I’d recommend about a 12 meter for a 180 pounder. But you’ll be on the beach watching others when it’s blowing hard or it’s at 16 mph.

You can learn in a couple of hour long lessons, but that will only teach you to ride in shallow water in which you can stand up and walk back to retrieve your board. This is fine for spring and fall south winds at Henderson Point in Bay St Louis, because you can stand up 300 yards offshore. But you need a little more training, or practice, to kiteboard in Lake Pontchartrain in the winter. It’s deep there, and you have to know how to body surf upwind and self rescue should it become necessary.

I’d suggest two or three lessons, then some practice at a beach environment where you can stand up. Then another lesson or two to get the hang of self-rescue and body sailing upwind for board retrieval.

The speed is something you control, but 20 mph is probably normal; up to 35 mph is easily done; and you can go much faster if you can handle the waves at those speeds.

Let me add that it is a super fun sport that you can do well into old age. I’m 59 next month, and I have a buddy who is 10 years older (would not type it on this board) and he spends winter months in Mexico and summer months in the Colombia Gorge on the Hood River. He kites about 250 days per year!

Kitesurfing since 2001.

Kite will cost 1200-1800 for a new set up.

Boards run 500 and up.

Harness is 100-200

The sport is dangerously easy.

Take lessons with a qualified instructor.

Learn the basics and then buy gear suited for your level of ability and style (wake style, surf, flat water, big air, foil boarding)

Most people learn the basics in less than 8 hours of good instruction.

Most kiters have at least 3 sizes of kites (small, medium, large) to cover the range of wind speeds.

You’ll probably end up with a few boards as well.

Outer Banks of NC and Tampa Bay are great places to learn.

I don’t trust any activity measured in meters.

It's just fairly intense and violent. I know guys with all kinds of injuries - from head injuries to dislocated shoulders. It obviously depends on the conditions, but if you push the envelope at all, it's fairly hardcore. Definitely takes a lot of stamina and upper body strength.

I liken it to serious motor/supercross type of jumping - if you can pull it off, it's about the best feeling in the world. But it absolutely comes with the risk of big time injury.

Ehhh, I don’t agree. It can be hard on the legs, but the upper body gets the day off except for abs. It’s a solid ab workout. All you’re doing with your arms is steering.
