The first one you can get out the door here for about 2,600. the one with the side car will be just shy of 7k depending on accessories you get.
ETA: and i know i can get a solid motorcycle for about the same price, but I'm not really interested in that. I'm all about the scooter life.

You're not looking hard enough. They are OK, they're not Honda, they're not Yamaha. When I lived in Boston, I worked with a lot of people who had Genuine scooters always in the shop. I had a Yamaha that you could shoot with an RPG and it would still be running. This is three years ago.
From what I've read, Genuines used to be very problematic, and they have gotten a lot better. You could kind of equate them to Hyundai in terms of cars. Better, but still not Honda or in the case of cars, Toyota, in terms of reliability.
Having said that, I tried out the Roughhouse and came fairly close to buying it before buying a Honda Ruckus this year. If you like the Roughhouse, get it. Or the other one for that matter.
And pay no attention to that scooters are not masculine bullshite that you'll get from people. There's all kinds of activities that you could do and have a good time and if you were worried about how you look, you might not do them.
I have a motorcycle and I have a scooter, and while I no doubt look less ridiculous on the bike, the scooter is fun, and what does some idiot's opinion mean compared to that?

If you're just dead set on a scooter instead of motorcycle, you should consider the Yamaha Majesty. My step-FIL had one that he bought a few years back when he got too old to get his leg over a motorcycle. As far as scooters go, it's legit. You can get in it and ride anywhere. It's got plenty of power and still gets like 70+ MPG.

nice post. i rode the ruckus and man was that thing slow compared to the roughhouse. I haven't looked at yamaha at all really. I seem to find more issues with the hondas than the genuines though. I guess it's a matter of preference and brand loyalty. That being said, I met a guy the other day with his ruckus at a honda place. I started picking his brain and he told me he has had 6 scooters total, 4 at the current moment.

and he had previously owned a yamaha and some other brand i didn't recognize. essentially, the guy told me to get a genuine. he said similar things that you did that they use to have serious issues, but are "currently leading the industry" (his words).

For Texas riding, I would just try to visualize which one would look better wedged under the front bumper of a Tahoe or Yukon or F-150. I think the sidecar model would give rubberneckers something better to look at.

I ride a SYM (Taiwanese) HD 200 fairly regularly and have some experience with a few others.
Of your choices, you definitely want the 125, although it's going to be pretty slow with that sidecar. That sidecar is pretty slick though.
There is no way you're going to get 45 mph on a 50 cc unless you weigh 65 lbs or you're full blast down a big hill - maybe. If you plan on riding on any street with a speed limit higher than 35, a 50 cc scooter is a bad idea.
I agree with all the people recommending the Yamahas and Hondas, because they are great and have a great dealer network. They are ignoring the issue of price. A Yamaha Majesty of Honda Silverwing are both great bikes, but also both cost $8-10,000.
Genuine is a pretty good brand with a decent network of dealers. They are also more affordable than the Japanese brands. If I was getting a Genuine it would be the Hooligan 170i:

Yes, my 3 mile commute at 530 in the morning will be treacherous.
I'll probably not get a scooter and keep cycling down major roadways during rush hour. That seems to make plenty of people upset, but they never say anything.

had a 650 honda I referred to as my scooter
1st one is my vote....way easier to maneuver than with a sidecar
safety first
if it's your 1st machine, I highly reco a motorcycle safety course at the local college....you'll learn things to survive
