I have been using AAA for the past 25 years but last time I needed them they said that I was behind on my bill. My Debit card strip was bad and I had to get a new card and completely forgot about updating AAA for the payment.
To my surprise, I needed them (flat tire) and they actually gave me the benefit of the doubt and let me update my past due notice over the phone.
Very pleased with their service and customer service

It covers all kinds of things, depending on your membership level. Lock outs, towing, rental cars, free maps and travel guides. They'll even come fill up your car if you're out of gas on the premiere level. My wife has locked her keys in the car so many times that just that alone pays for it for me.

If for no other reason than to avoid the DMV...it's worth it. There's so much DMV paperwork you can do at AAA. Saves the aggravation of havING to stare into the soulless faces of government employees.

GF's dad bought her a lifetime membership. It comes in handy when she hits her third curb of the year and I'm at work.

AAA covers a bunch of other stuff as already mentioned. You call, they come out pretty quickly and you don't pay a penny at the time it's needed (included in membership). Some roadside assistance programs reimburse you, but you have to pay first and submit paperwork.
AAA also means hotel discounts and rental car discounts. I've booked rental cars through them and saved money and most hotels offer a AAA discount (you have to ask and show your card upon check in....discount is usually 10-20%)

It's like $60 a year, right? Totally worth it. You make your $$ just on cheaper motel stays (usually about $10-15 savings gs per night)

I bought a membership the last time I went to Hawaii. I think it was 40-50$ off the room per night. Never used it for actual auto purposes.

The discounts that the membership card provides at car repair shops, car rental places, truck stops, hotels, etc. alone make it worth it. The card's discounts more than pay for the membership fee itself.

Totally worth it, even for younger people who can still do basic stuff like replace a tire-- the Premium service is a lifesaver if you ever need a tow way out in the middle of nowhere, and if you live in a cold weather state it pays for itself that one winter where you don't replace your battery and need a couple of jumps.

Many people aren't aware that their car's warranty, their car insurance, or even their cell phone has road side assistance built into their costs. I used the RSA that came with my T-Mobile phone plan about 10 years or so ago and it worked to tow my car like a charm.
My wife's Kia Optima has RSA built into its warranties. You may want to investigate either of those two possibilities before paying for AAA.

Your insurance company will usually offer free roadside assistance that is about the same. Also if you bought a new vehicle the manufacturer has roadside assistance as part of the deal. Very often it is the same thing since AAA in many areas will outsource it to a local company.
That said, if you get the real AAA roadside assistance (meaning their branded vehicles) it's very good. I had problems with a bad battery one time. He came out to me, replaced the battery and bad connector wires and everything on the spot. It cost a little extra but was a very good deal for a battery replacement.
You can probably save a little cash by just using your insurance carrier's free roadside service but the AAA fee isn't much and I've never had a problem with them.

I have state farms version. Never had to use it but I think it's like $2 a month so frick it
