My dad has been big into it all my life, and I'm toying with the idea of taking my test and starting to build a little console. Anyone operators on here have any recommendations for how I should start building out my radio setup (handheld first, types of beginner scanners, power supply, etc)?

Find the nearest Ham Radio hobby club near you. There is usually a nearby club.

The larger Ham Radio stores on-line will have good advice.

Plus, there's YouTube.

But your local Ham Radio hobby club would be thrilled to have you.

Ha, I have, but it's crazy how I enjoy getting other people's opinions and not just taking dad's word for it. I'm weird like that

I've been reading about this online a bit too recently, and it is definitely on the list of things I'd like to get into, just trying to find time and money.

You're going to have to fight him when the OT steers you wrong and your Pops doesn't like your choices. Check his knuckles and book the Sonic.

Seriously, though, I've been interested in HAM as well. I haven't had the time to dive into it, but I may one day.

my main interest in HAM is for the potential "shite hits the fan scenario", but i'm not entirely clear on how much benefit a radio will have if the government collapses. maybe some of you prepper baws can educate a dumb aggy

As I am completely unfamiliar, what’s the point of being a HAM radio operator? I guess what I’m asking is what are the benefits?

If major communication is down for whatever reason, ham operators typically step it up. Most cases, weather.
