Some dude just came by our business trying to sell what basically amounted to legal insurance for around $15/month. First off, I can't believe our company president allowed him to do this, but people were signing up like crazy. Most of these people are well educated, but apparently not smart. The service allows you access to a lawyer 24/7 and a range of "free" legal services from the preparation of wills to the defense of lawsuits, insurance dealings and IRS advice. Every instinct I have told me it was a scam at worst or at best sub-par legal advice, so I passed.

A quick google search shows mixed reviews. Anyone here have any experience with this company, so I can let the few people I like read this thread. Hopefully, they will cancel their membership.

They did it at my company. Only a couple people still have it. One guy told me it helped him get out of a ticket. I didn't buy it.

Guy I worked with quit his job to sell this shite and kept trying to get me to buy it.

"People are 10 times more likely to need legal help than medical help. You have medical insurance, why not legal insurance?" etc.

That's the same pitch this guy went with.

Well that is wildly inaccurate.

The guy across the hall works for Legal Shield. They sign people up and contract with local law firms to do the work, which is what this guy does. As best I can tell he stays on the phone all day giving simple legal advice to people. If it's anything more complicated than a traffic ticket or writing a demand letter, he refers them to someone else.

Jeff bell is the CEO and usually people of his caliber dont align themselves with with companies that arent legit. It's as simple as this, would you like to pay $15 per month to have free legal advice and counseling whenever needed? They can also get you out of tickets or at least have the points dropped. Thy also provide Will's and LLC's. Not bad for what we spend per week on coffee. No I dont sell it, but a friend does and he is doing well with the service. I signed up to help him out and have already used it for a custody case.

I had a few years ago. Got me a paycheck owed to me by an old company and got me out of a speeding ticket. I think it's worth it.

1) If you can find a way to use a couple hundred dollars of minor legal services a year, it might be worth it. Traffic ticket, one off thing like the aforementioned letter (I presume) to get a paycheck that was owed.

2) I'm sure they make money because most people don't need a couple hours of legal services a year.

3) People who don't use it but take security in the fact they're "protected" probably aren't getting their money's worth. People involved in this are not the lawyers you want for a significant legal issue, and I'm assuming more significant items are excluded anyway.

You get what you pay for with lawyers. If you try to do it on the cheap it can bite you. My dad recently made a nice fee unsnarling a revocable trust that was badly written by an online legal service.

Yeah, if all they handle are traffic tickets, it seems like it wouldn't be worth it.

Most people aren't getting multiple tickets a year so there are already mechanisms that courts (or Tigerdroppings) will be more than happy to tell you about to avoid points and/or jacked up insurance rates when fortune doesn't smile on you while driving the highway once every 5 or 6 years.

My company began offering a similar legal insurance service as part of our benefits package a few years ago. It wasn't very expensive and sounded like a decent deal so I opted in. A couple years later my wife goes stupid and we get a divorce. I tried using the legal insurance benefit.

Then: Oh I'm sorry, our service doesn't cover divorce. But we can refer you to a local divorce attorney and your initial consultation will be free.

Me: Isn't the initial consultation normally free?

Them: Maybe, I'm not sure. But I know the attorneys on our list won't charge.

Me: Ok fine. Just for curiosity what type of legal issues does your service cover?

Them: Well..... We don't actually cover the full expenses but we can refer you to an attorney in your area.

Me: So I'm really paying you a fee out of every paycheck for a referral service?

Them: Pretty much.

I cancelled that shite at the first opportunity.

That has to be bullshite.

I use medical insurance several times a year and haven't needed legal help in a decade. (checkups, which ironically are FOR insurance and wife's lady part exams)

i had it and it got my wife out of a ticket, and the part she was happiest about was not having to wait when she had to go in front of the judge. people with lawyers go first, saved her about 4 hours that day as our last name is towards the end of the alphabet

I have something like this through my employer. I've used it to have wills drawn up for my wife and I, to have those wills re-vised after we had another child, and for the legal work on a mortgage refinance. Paid nothing out of pocket for this, it was all 100% covered by the plan.

It will also cover some things related to estate planning for your parents, which I've looked into but haven't done yet. Depends on your situation and what you are wanting to do as to whether or not it may be worth it
