Does a sunfish suffice?

Hopefully not going down this rabbit hole too far, just wondering what it takes.

S grew up competitively racing sailboats. He will be here shortly to chime in.

I think he actually said he is into the skat of a man. Not catamaran.

Depends on the age of the kid, they usually start them in an Optimus, then move up to sunfish, lasers, and 420s. My advise would be to put them in sailing camp and see how they progress, sailing can get expensive quick.

Our 11 year old mostly races the 420’s and hobie cats.

Depends on age
Youngsters start with Opti (weight/age limit)
progress to Sunfish. Then 420, lightening, etc...
Have a brother that sailed in Jr. worlds for sunfish.

No, But I give to a foundation that teaches homeless children nautical flag signaling. It changes lives.

Yea, he's done sailing camp every year, for multiple weeks a summer. Next week starts his first time at the Advanced Racing Clinic. He's mostly learned about sailing the individual boats, now it turns to racing. Rules, skills...He's really excited. Nervous too, since some of the boys at the regular camps were really fast. I told him someone has to come in last, no big deal.

Nerves take a little while, but that and skills are only gained by spending time on the water racing. I grew up racing/sailing and taught camp for a few summers. As far as racing goes he may be better off becoming a junior member and sticking to flying scots and 420s (assuming that is what the clinic is in) so you can avoid buying a boat (that's competitive/expensive)

He's 12, so he'll be able to sail what's offered at the club (6 Scots, 4 420s, 2 Sunfish, 13 Optis)...but it seems like Sailfish are just the right size for now.

We're late for the Summer series, but maybe if he practices he can join the Fall series.

I'm a catamaran guy, myself. Took a few lessons. It's fun as hell.

A local private school here has sailing lessons ever summer. Is your kid going to do lessons first? They should be able to give you some beginner tips and give you an idea of where to start.

ETA: never mind
