Anyone have experience with Big Brother / Big Sister?

I did it several years ago. They were in such dire need of big brothers for boys that they asked if I would be willing to take a little boy, instead. Which.. Of course. I'm already a big sister to a younger brother (who was coincidentally the same age as my "little" at the time) so it was probably easier for me to do since I'm used to smelly boys. :)

It was a great experience and taught me a lot. Little boy and his mom moved farther away so it did end, but I do recommend it if you have the time and love to share with a child.

His mom told me she was just glad he was getting to be around white people because all he knew were black folks and she wanted him to have good experiences with those outside of his race. She was always so candid with me, and I really appreciated how open she was.

I'm glad you started this thread. I'd like to hear from those with experience too.

I have a 10 and 7 year old. Boy and girl. Have any of you participated in the program when you had your own kids? I would think it could be very beneficial for everyone involved in their own ways.

I would be interested. But how does it end? Is it just a one time thing. I just worry that I would build this relationship and end up wanting to adopt them. How do you just end a relationship like that? It just seems like it's a very long-term commitment.

They have parents. You'd just be giving them new experiences, hopefully be a good role model, have some fun and then when he/she gets older and become more independent, you keep up with them like you would with an actual little brother/sister.
