I want to put a putting green in my back yard to putt on obviously, and to chip to. I've got a good 40 yards from corner to corner so I can chip.

Anyone have any experience installing it?
What type of turf you got? what sub base you used, and how you leveled things off? Did you make the surface mostly flat or did you try to intentionally make the surface have slopes? I might even put in a sand trap b/c i'm terrible out of the sand.

Not worth it. You have buy a very specialized mower.

He'll eventually end up making every putt he looks at.

Where's the fun in that?

Not using real grass. Want to install artificial turf for the reason you just said and the painstaking time and money it would take to keep it weed free.

I highly recommend you research the hell out of this so you'll know the cost and time associated with this.

Never mind, you're going the synthetic route. These guys are one of the best for synthetic turf.

You might be able to adjust a real mower to do it but you'll still need to cut every other day in the summer.

Also, those machines are a little tricky. I cut the greens as my main job one summer and I put that machine in just about every pond.

I have a little.
The turf can range anywhere from $1.50/sqft to $5.00/sqft

I'm wanting to put in about a 20'x15' area for the green, and then i'll need probably 3 or 4 small patches to put throughout the yard to chip from. I can just stand on the grass and have the patch of turf to put the ball on.

My dad had this some years back but it's a total pain the butt to keep up. To make it golf course quality, it's a daily job.

So he quit messing with it and just goes to the driving range

I would think the biggest con with artificial is not being able to move the cup.

My yard is one big water hazard right now

My dad had one years ago, but the grass died and was too long anyway. I was little, so he was still young and dumb himself and tried to do it himself

Sorry, no help

Yes.
I figured the turf is more realistic to a golf course than my grass. It would be like chipping from the rough all the time.

I have an uncle that has one. Set up like a practice green on a course with about 8 holes randomly spread throughout. Artificial turf with a fringe around. I think you can just "chip" from whatever grass you have in the yard unless you really want a fairway simulation or something. I'm actually surprised how well it has held up. We visit for holidays and it still looks as new as it ever did and is under some serious tree cover. No clue what it cost to put in though.

Yeah i'm not doing anything that nice or expensive.
I'm going to do it myself, and i'm not spending more than $1,500.
$1000 on the turf, $500 on dirt, sand, gravel, rentals and whatever else.
I don't pay people to work for me. Today you can watch a youtube video how to do something and do it yourself, assuming you have decent skills and patience, and I do.

I'm getting one of these soon

Birdie Ball putting greens are some of the best indoor mats out there.

I'm getting one that is 7' to work on short putts.
