UNO still has the bones to be great. Fast pool. Now, though, just dingy, broken scoreboard, dark, and dirty. Who owns the pool? Can NuWave not just fund it to keep it up to standard? I wish we had more locations to travel.

back in the early 80's, I swam at the Ocean Springs pool and one of my best friends was from Gautier and swam for OS. I swam for Dick Bower and the BOLTS. I remember swimming at UT in Austin and it was a world class facility back then, and still is today 4 decades later .

no. but I am good friends with two coaches that do that. I can't stand it, personally

I’ve had kids swimming for about the past 8 years. Couple years ago, the whistler was absent for the first two meets. I had always assumed it was a kid. And assumed he graduated and was quite happy. Then he came back. Figured out last year it’s a coach. It’s very obnoxious.

In the event you’re my kids’ coach, thanks for being an awesome coach. If you’re not, still thanks. 30 years is a long run and our kids coaches make good impacts on their lives.

That OS Y is being put under now. Building a new facility. Nothing fancy, but that pool is done. The Biloxi Nat is pretty solid after over 45 years. Wish the was a little deeper on the shallow end, though, or if blocks could be instaled on diving well side for SC or into a bulkhead. Pool swims pretty fast.

but not a great facility, unless you want to get shot 2 blocks away.

To this meathead who swam in bayous much more than I ever did in a pool, it’s top notch. I agree that the surrounding area leaves a lot to be desired, but I diamond in a steaming pile of horseshite is still a diamond. Not to mention I’m talking about 10-12 year olds, not Michael phlipping Phelps.

No.

To be perfectly honest I didn’t know anyone from Sulphur could swim.

Stay away from trailer parks in that area.

the LSU facility is top notch

We must have different standards for swimming facilities. The Nat at LSU is terrible. The pool is fast, the facility sucks. It’s embarrassing. Get out and see some real top notch facilities (UGA, Tenn, UT, Ga Tech, Mizzou, Minn, Indy… pretty much any high school in Texas or Indiana, etc). It’ll blow your mind. Even Tupelo, MS has a half decent facility.

SPAR isn’t much better though. Glad I only have to attend 1 more meet there in February. And then back to The Nat for a week of swamp arse in the summer.

Why does Sulphur get to host the meet every year over LSU's nat?

Rick Bishop (LSU head coach) told me he tried to get the meet moved to LSU, but LHSAA didn’t want any part of that. They have some kind of deal with SPAR.

There’s talk of a facility to be built on the west bank. But I’ll be really surprised if it ever materializes.

We had the exact same experience 3 yrs ago when our son was swimming for Mandeville. Raining and cold,We parked our RV there for parents and kids not swimming to get out of the chlorine gas and to eat something besides the crappola they sell.
HORRIBLE place ! Just don’t go !

Interesting, my son swam and we have been to meets there probably 10 times, including 4 LHSAA Finals. I can honestly say I never heard anyone concerned about the ventilation, multiple kids getting sick, etc.

You’re a Sulphur govt. or rec insider. And a complete LIAR !

I remember that year, it was very cold. Now, they do not allow you back in once you leave.

is this the female version of travel ball ?
that would be softball. In reality everything is travel these days, and has been for at least 10 years. Swim, baseball, softball, basketball, cheer, volleyball, soccer. Travel is a key part of all these weekend activities for children in most places. Football is the only one I can thing of that may not have a travel element to it at the younger ages.

I believe LHSAA negotiates contracts with facilities that will include multiple years. Wrestling has moved from the Kenner Center to Bossier. Baseball has moved over the years. Etc. But yes, LHSAA is a miserable organization.

Year round meets are voted on annually by the coaches.

it is a state owned/run facility. Which is why it has never been completely repaired since Katrina. State works incredibly slowly and is broke.

Didn't Thibodaux Regional recently build a good pool?

They did. But I don’t think it would be large enough to host an event of this size given the number of spectator seats needed.

My funny pool story of the day comes courtesy of Nicholls State. Nicholls once had a large pool between Stopher Gym and Shaver Gym. It was a nice large deep pool. So large that one would think it would be used for athletic events, but it wasn’t. The reason why it wasn’t used for athletic events was that it was too short and did not meet Olympic or Collegiate pool size standards. I think by the 2000’s the pool started to crack and was leaking badly, so the school filled it in.

But back to the LHSAA and their championship site selections, it does suck that some venues get rubber stamped year after year as host sites.

No facility in LA has “enough needed.” I put air quotes because most people squat in the spectator seating the entire meet instead of pop in and out when they have swimmers in events, forcing many people to stand behind others blocking their views.
