Well I know where my next road trip is gonna be

Almost the entire stretch of marsh along the road is the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge. You can drive about a mile down old 87 from the Sabine Pass/ Sea Rim side and do some good walk in hunts for geese. It's a long walk through cordgrass but it can be very productive at times. The fact that it is a federal refuge has always been a part of the problem with moving the roadway inland. Every few years, we would have one politician or another claim that they are going to get the new highway 87 built but it hasn't happened yet and been that way for many many years.

Why does it need to be asphalt? Why can't they just push some dirt?
Posted on 9/23/16 at 6:50 pm to Hammertime
Because it would be gone after the first storm. There is nothing to protect the roadway. No sand dunes there. Just marsh

There's not even any marsh anymore. You're basically driving on the beach now. Parts of the drive were less than three feet from the surf.

That's why they won't put a regular roadway. Building and maintaining a dirt one is way cheaper. Just stack some of that broken asphalt between it and the Gulf, and your good to go for a few waves

This. Their is a nude beach right there at the beginning. Bunch of old perverts.
I was four-wheelin' along one afternoon heading WEST into the sunset. All of the sudden my eyes adjusted to human forms - bunch of fat naked old people. They weren't even fazed by the truck coming towards them. I hit the brakes and turned around.

I'd love to make that trip in my jeep.

I used to Kayak fish that beach from time to time. Very good Bull Red and shark fishing. Even caught quite a few jack crevalle and trout in the surf.

It was just THE WAY to get to Crystal Beach (Bolivar) without going to Winnie.
Odd, sunset pic from Bolivar just popped up on my twitter:

Ran it with about 30 Jeeps or so around 2005/2006. Got an inspection sticker ticket on the way back.
Nude beach was pretty funny. When we did it, about any stock 4wd could handle the trek.

Could you be more specific?
US 87 goes from Port Lavaca all the way to the Texas Panhandle, probably even further really.
