One of, if not the, last forms of widely consumed public, live drama. And it's, mostly, unscripted -which adds the elements of variability and suspense which trigger human curiosity.
I would find life boring without sports, personally.
That said, it's too damn bad that we, as a species, have almost abandoned (relatively speaking) other forms of live entertainment, such as theatre.

What has happened to us as a society? It used to be we would man up and do things that were considered much more productive in life like starting and participating in world wars.
Now we just sit around and play with balls. Not necessarily anything wrong with that; but if we're going to play with a set, let's play like MEN.
The more I think about it, the less I understand the lure of sports.
