You essentially take a single lifestyle and damn near multiply it by 5 if the wife isn't working.

He's 24. I doubt his kids are very old. If you're spending as much on 3 year olds as you are 24 year olds you're doing it wrong.

Old money people often drive older cars as they aren't trying to show off their money.

Cars need to be more affordable. Most people can't afford a new car especially when you factor in financing and insurance. If we paid everyone as we pay auto workers, this problem would be resolved.

Eh, he didn't say whether he did or did not have a wife working I don't think?

But yea, if he has a house paid off, he very likely lives in a tiny town where you can get some really old house for like $15k or some shite.

There's just no possible way you could save up any substantial amount of money at 24 with 3 kids and 3 cars.

Only way I can think of is what you described. A rural setting with either a very cheap piece of property or on a USDA loan with 0 down.

That would be a family of 4.

It's safe to say people have personal lower set standards than I do and that's okay.

It's safe to say you're out of touch with reality. I'm giving you facts

I've raised two. Two of those expenses are only for the first year or two. To say it's equal to five single lifestyles is not accurate. You don't pay rent at 5 different places. You don't have 5 vehicles. You don't pay insurance and gas for 5 vehicles. You don't have five utility bills. You don't have 5 comcast bills. And on and on.

That doesn't make him poor

Sounds like at 24, he makes more money than his peers and his income will continue to increase. 65k in the South or Midwest isn't bad money

Relatively, as long as you're not buying luxury on a middle class budget. Interest rates are incredibly low too.

Food scales
Electricity Usage scales
Water Usage scales
Insurance Scales
Gas consumption stays a 2 (for now)
Internet/Cable does not scale
Cell Phones stay at 2 (for now)

So lets throw out some hypothetical approximations:

- Food Bill has to be around 600 a month for 5 people.
- Electricity depending on kW/h if there is someone always home probably runs 120-200 a month.
- Using my employer provided family plan as reference would be ~ 450-500 if you included vision and dental.
- Gas for two people @ 2 week intervals should be right around ~ 140 a month.
- Cell Plan minimum 100 for 2
~ Full Coverage Car insurance for three vehicles are probably right around 300 and im being conservative.

So we are right around 1840 a month not assuming any other debt such as credit cards or another car loan.

Including Water and Sewage he's sitting right around 1900. Not taking assuming any other debt.

Leaving ~1850 leftover for any other items.

Bare bones seems doable.

Not including dumb shite like going out / content subscriptions / etc.

edit: Literally his only saving grace is no house note. In a large city he could expect to see all that savings gone to get a place for a family of 5.

Poor people cars are pretty expensive IYAM.

You can't get anything that runs and is halfway reliable for less than like $2,000.

Exactly

A decent car shouldn't really be affordable for someone working minimum wage and 25 hrs/wk.

But their are a plethora of affordable cars out there, especially if you're talking used. Short of crazy circumstances, if you work hard, you can afford a car.

When I see a poor person car I immediately think they have an android phone and say things like "......works just fine".

For the most part, I think your approximations are on point.

I'm interested to know how his house is paid for.

The only reason it's not poor is no house note.

Otherwise he wont have any substantial savings and no retirement.
