You did him a huge favor.
Also good. A hotshot programmer oughta know not to get into a verbal altercation with a secretary. Nobody wins.
I know a hotshot IT guy that got fired for getting into a verbal fight with a security guard at a NASA site.
NASA banned him and the company fired him.
Years later, when he got hired by another company, he had to ask for permission to go back to work at that site from the NASA director.

He said if it came down to a highly skilled programmer and a secretary, she would get fired first. I suggested she knew where the bodies were buried and they may be afraid to fire her....

Ref the non-competes, I have the opposite of taking a signed document. I was one of the original employees of a company that ended up getting pretty big. As they grew, HR sent me a packet of things to sign including a non-compete (I lived here, company was in NC). I said to myself, "no way I am signing this shite" and put it to the side. They reminded me once and promptly forgot about it. Fast forward several years and I am out processing after I gave notice. They opened my HR file to find... Nothing.
In the weeks prior someone had started a rumor that I was leaving to go to our biggest competitor. They had the lawyers all lined up to whack me on the head with the non-compete. The one that didn't exist.
They asked if I knew where the non-compete was and I answered honestly that I never signed one and wasn't interested in signing one now. They had a sidebar with the lawyer and cut me a five figure check on the spot to sign one.
Funny thing was that I was leaving to start my own company in a different business. They were none too pleased when my website and company went active. Wish I knew who started the competitor rumor so I could buy them a steak.

Happy to say I will never put myself in a position where I work at a place where HR is a thing. Talk about an insulting way to keep the proletariat in line.

I used to work for a mom and pop with no HR. A woman who worked in the field was known for sleeping with the clients to increase her yearly earnings. I made a joke publicly about it. Not good.
She hired an attorney who advised her that if my joke was based in truth, she would get nothing.
The owner and I attended a sensitivity training class. The instructor told us my sin was no big deal but to keep quiet in the future. The class lasted about 7 minutes. The whole mess was an education though.
Within 6 months, the owner was nailing her also. I found this out about the same time that another company offered me a 30% raise to join them. I bailed.
He hired her as an office manager and she still works there, alongside his current girlfriend and wife.
TLDR: My ex company had no HR office but the owner was a hell of a juggler.

Maybe you should go ask that in the non-compete thread. This is not it.
