You were fired for lack of attention to detail.

If you don't know that before getting laid off then no.

In 2000, I worked for a startup telecom that filed Chap 13 insolvency.... No severence and was shorted on my last paycheck

From 2000-2004, Two other telecoms closed my location and offered me to relocate within the company.

I got out of that industry and into IT after that experience

Yep....while on vacation too.

I don't know if a severance is mandatory but it made my 6 month retirement a little less stressful.

I have. I got one months pay and had only been there for 8 months. So not bad. But I had to promise I wouldn’t sue them. Easy buy off though for a new and young employee compared to even a frivolous lawsuit had I chose to be an arse.

Was laid off at the end of May due to Covid. I got 3 months pay + 3 months of employer's cost for insurance.

Typically 2 weeks and PTO payout is customary. In my case it was at least.

Once in college. Went in on my day off to cover for my counterpart. They were going to let go whoever came in.

I was laid off in 2020 because the government told my department to close down because of a virus. Good times

I've been laid off a few times. Not all companies offer severance. I work new projects and once a project is completed mass lay offs always occur as the work is known to be temporary when its started. If the company you are working for does not have a like position for your role then you have to look elsewhere. It's pretty common in my line of work but never hard to find a job if you are willing to travel.
