Yes, I have been laid off. I was in an industry that is very stable and layoffs are uncommon. Everyone who was laid off did get a package of 1 week of pay for ever year you had with the company and some workshops on building a resume and interviewing techniques.

I have to say, the worst part is the feeling of rejection and knowing that the company released you when they kept some other employees. Try not to take it personally, as it will only hinder you on your job search.

I worked at a grocery store in high school that didn’t reopen due to Hurricane Andrew. I got a $1000 severance. Didn’t tell my parents until years later, I was bad mother for about 3 weeks

I got fired once in a downsizing. Was working IT for a large company and they let a bunch of us go on Valentines Day. Worst part was they had their best year ever the year before and we had bonuses coming, but those of us who got let go didn't get the bonus. Or severance.

Still makes me mad to think about it.

I did in 2004, I had been with the company for over 15 years and they sent me home with a 1 year severance package. Happened in late August and I was a hunting/fishing man until Feb of the next year.

I think if I got a year severance I'd take a few months off too.

I was laid off from my first job back in 2001. It was a dot com and they literally let go 95% of the workforce. Those who stayed behind were prepping the company to be sold.

Come on I know oil industry guys here...

Been laid off twice...when bp bought amoco I was caught in research department without PhD....
Was there 17 years.. us citizens severance maxed at a year...European maxed at 1.5 years... medical covered for a year...I got a year and my severance date was two months in the future.. laid off Monday...started a new job Friday with a 20 percent increase...asked my boss if I could leave before my severance date...he said yes so I got checks from two companies for two months then got a check for 12 more months from amoco...

Second time got 1.5 months ( was there 3 years) company was shutting down us operations...started three weeks later ..same pay but bonus structure that paid 20-60 percent more...I maxed out bonus...

You do not want to hear how nice it was when the new small company I worked for was bought by a big oil three years later.:)

Always worked out...but it is an event that will test you..make finding a new job your new job immediately....

Also I know a lot of people laid off..probably more that have than have not in my industry..(oil)

You should. I got laid off about 7 years ago and got 6 months pay. Luckily I started my current job immediately afterwards so all that money went straight to the bank.

Should I get a severance package?

Depends on who you work for. Severence is a benefit and not an obligation. I believe it is a tax deduction for the company as well.
