Back in 1980, i went from Nurenburg to Koln in 4 hours...and tailed a SMLM car for about 100 miles...280ZX with the 5 speed was the way to go....

fastest I ever drove was 135...then was passed by a Mercedes like I was standing still...

Did you get a sports car? Looking to get something like a Porsche 911 and was wondering how difficult that would be.

If you want to do that just get a car and go to the Nurburgring

Going 70 on the interstate is painful in my car. It wants to run about 100.

I wish we had a population who could handle no speed limit. My morning commute would be cut in half.

It's not the population, it's the roads. The interstate build quality is crap compared to the autobahn. There's no way I'd go much over 90-100 on these roads. The Germans have to road design perfected. Long, straight, flat and smooth.

I think its both, but mostly what you said.

Also, I noticed a shite ton of people don't take the Autobahn half a mile to the next exit like they do in America.

I´ve done this is the car above pictured. I would not feel comfortable in a mini at that speed.....

The Autobahn from Frankfurt to Kaiserslautern and the one from Frankfurt to Garmisch were pretty fun and open drives.

Stay out of the left lane, except to pass. You'll think you're going fast and no one is behind you. Then, out of nowhere, a Mercedes or BMW is on your back bumper with it's left blinker on.

Know what town you have to drive towards. There isn't anything like I-10 E or W. It's I-10 to New Orleans or I-10 to Lake Charles type of thing.

And Ausfahrt is not a town.

This is all very solid advice.

A couple of other items that sound like "no duh" type of things, but Americans tend to do anyway:
- Don't drive with one hand.
- Don't drive with a cell phone visible.
- Absolutely, do NOT run out of gas on the Autobahn (I know that sounds stupid, but it is actually one of the few occasions you can get a ticket on the Autobahn)
- Plan your lane changes well in advance.
- check your review often.

Munich and Garmisch are great places to visit.

The drive from Frankfurt to Heidelberg/Manheim is pretty decent too but can get congested.

A lot, but it has been about 20 years ago. Usually drove at around 85MPH, in a VW Jetta and had no problems, there were always cars going much faster and slower. the Semi Trucks did have a speed limit, and were required to stay in the right lane which helped a lot. If you have a car capable of high speed never, ever, ever pass on the right no matter how slow the car you are approaching is, unlike in the US they will move over to the right and allow you to pass. I don't know about today, but at the time it seemed like there were more BMW and Mercedes cars on the roads in the US than Germany, gas was expensive, and the average person drove VWs, Opels, Ford Escorts, Hondas, and Toyotas.

When I went in 2008 a ton of cabs were Benz and BMWs, but I saw a lot of civilians driving other stuff.

I was disappointed a Ferrari or Lamborghini didn't pass me going 200 mph . I kept waiting for that, but it never happened. It was just standard looking cars leaving me in the dust. I think I got up to around 100 mph (which obviously isn't a big deal), but I didn't stay there long. You do see slow moving stuff in the right and passing, while fun, made me a bit anxious. If I got used to it I would do it a lot, but I drove on there this once.

The most surprising thing that ever passed me was a black Dodge Viper. I'd occasionally see MB AMG or BMW M series, rarely see the Italian cars. But a Viper really caught me off guard.

Had this happen to me on a MWR trip from Hoenfels to Rottenberg. Bus was doing about 80 and I was half asleep. This Lamborghini passed us at what had to be 200. Made a loud screaming sound as it came past and scared the shite out of me. I jumped out of my seat, looked out the front window and it was just a spec in the window down road.

I don't know about the weight, but yeah it's a V10 or V12. Too bad we were in a 120Kph/semi traffic jam zone. So he could fly by me.
