Did it 2002. Stayed at Hotel Edison. Went out to the area around 2:30 and there were not many people. Between 4 and 5pm they start corralling people into the barricaded "pens" starting at the front. Suddenly, people were coming from everywhere. We ended up 4 pens from the front. It's pretty packed in the pens and almost impossible to sit. Security was letting people out to use bathrooms and such on a "1 in 1 out basis". You can use bathrooms at places like Sbarro's if you buy something. The confetti drop is awesome and made the whole thing worth it. Was back in the room by 12:15. Glad I did it but would not do again. Going to Macy's Thanksgiving Parade this year.

Just make sure your wife is well aware that most of the day will be uncomfortable for her. Eat a lot of bananas in the days after Christmas, and bring some vitamin B supplements with you or something.

I know the following isn't what you're looking for in this thread, but for the love of Christ, please reconsider.

What's worse?
a) a cranky wife on a vacation where you've spent thousands of dollars
b) a cranky wife at home in the warm for free

Yes it was terrible. Worse than Mardi Gras night on bourbon. Nowhere to move or pass. Get into a club and celebrate the new year there.

Sounds terribly over crowded.

I did it once. It was 2 below and I froze my dick off. It was awful. That said, if the temp was better it would have been pretty awesome.

Couple of options.

1. If you want to be in the crowd in the street, obviously get there early. Like noonish at the latest. They only let a certain number of people per block and then the gate it off so people can have some room to get out of the crowd for a break every once in awhile. Super organized, cops everywhere. If you leave your spot though to go into a store or something, you sometimes can't get back in so be careful.

2. Restaraunts along times square will sell tickets to get in for various prices. Applebees was like 100 bucks a person. They were still being sold the day before by the way. Best to purchase early though. This included a meal and unlimited drinks for the night. They have a balcony you can step out and watch during the countdown. Most of these type places will have a performer inside. Lady Gaga was at applebees the year I went but this was before she was big.

There are good and bad about both options. Hope this helps.
