If I show up with a 1940s style hair cut and no facial hair, will they let me be an extra even though I have an electric wheelchair (which they didn't have in the 40s)?

Yeah.. Abour $120/day.
When I called the casting office to discuss the requirements, she said...
They will be filming the battle scenes this week where you will be fighting the Germans and the Russians.
I stopped her and said.. Russians? They were our Allies in WW2!
I take it she failed history.

Filming this is just like being in the Military. A bunch of standing around for an hour+ followed by repetitive stuff (hours of filming the same scene.)
Yesterday was nearly 5 hours straight of one main scene with most of the cast. One take had the camera about 2’ from my face for a good 45 seconds. I was trying to count lint on the guys hat right in front of me (who had lines in the scene) to distract me from wanting to look over.
I guess with it being on the Kidd, your chances of making several scenes in the movie are high since there are a finite number of people onboard and I believe they have been short handed throughout the filming.

Probably because, you know, people have jobs or kids or shite for 12 hours on weekdays.

It sounds like it would be an interesting experience.
I know someone who was an extra in pitch perfect, but she didn't get paid. Actually, she went with a group of friends, who were all around when they were doing the shooting and she was the only one who actually made it in a scene, but the requirements wasn't as specific. It was a bar scene I think and needed people to go there at a specific time dressed as they would if they were going out to a bar.
You being told you were going to be fighting the Germans AND the Russians, in a WWII movie is pretty funny. But I don't know if I would have the patience to just hang around for several hours..

I guess it all depends on the budget, but it seems like they could digitally insert people into scenes to make it appear as if there are more people. Something like they did in Gladiator (and I am sure a lot of other movies). In Gladiator, they filled up about a quarter of an arena and was able to use that to fill in the 3/4 of the arena that was empty.

Several people are taking a day off of work here and there just to be in a Tom Hanks war movie.
Since I’m my own boss in my own company, it’s easy for me.
It’s not too bad. I brought a deck of cards and we played Spades for a while and my team was kicking everyone’s arse.
..and shooting the shite with the Military advisors like Captain Dale Dye (Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers) and other extras.
The budget is roughly 50 mil. It’s easier to CGI people in an arena compared to people running down the ship’s length during GQ to man the weapons.
..and catering has been great: Leg of lamb one day, NY strip the next.

They probably wouldn't let you if it was a homemade wooden chair.
It's a war movie, dummy.

Finished the majority of the filming today. Some minimal shots remain next week.
I guess I’ll find out if any of the closeup scenes I was filmed in actually make the cut next April.

Sounds like someone wants some very particular looking fluffers.

After filming, I believe they wanted a group of guys with roughly the same build so it wouldn’t be obvious to the audience that the same people are manning several different weapons on the Kidd from the wide angle shots.
I should be seen easily in 2 scenes (specific ones that won’t be re-shot and are important to the film) and possibly 4-5 others.
