I fight it quite a bit. Don't really believe that therapy or meds are the answer, but I'm not sure what is.

Find some happy things to do.
Keep busy.
Ok to feel that way just find a way to move forward.

SAD is a real thing
Both are very real. I do believe there is a difference though. Being sad is generally pretty temporary. I think people who are depressed have lost hope in a major core value. When you lose hope, you lose meaning of life (in some aspects of your life).
I would recommend figuring out what you value in life, and prioritize those thing appropriately. Pain in not optional in life, but suffering is. Do not sit around and mope. Take action on something. Find a problem in life, and hit it head on - true happiness comes from solving life's problems (which never end by the way).
Keep your head up!

Yep. Winter sucks. I love sun and heat, hate cold and short daylight hrs
I resisted antidepressants for yrs. Gave in and it helps. But nothing beats exercise and being outdoors even if just bs yardwork.
Also, just talking to people, face-to-face general stuff.

I've posted before, my wife has chronic depression that's resistant to meds. It sucks.

Yes, but I come to the realization as to what is, and I suck it up, and move on. Mind over matter
Sure, one's attitude is critical, but try not to dismiss things like this so quickly. It's hard to go with "mind over matter" when your mind is what's the matter.

I'm sure it's not the answer for all situations, but I can't believe how much a good diet has helped me

Exercise, eat healthy and talk to a doctor about Lexapro.
It can be a game changer. Good luck, you can conquer it.

"I was never gonna get off that island. I was gonna die there, totally alone. I was gonna get sick, or get injured or something. The only choice I had, the only thing I could control was when, and how, and where it was going to happen. So... I made a rope and I went up to the summit, to hang myself. I had to test it, you know? Of course. You know me. And the weight of the log, snapped the limb of the tree, so I-I - , I couldn't even kill myself the way I wanted to. I had power over *nothing*. And that's when this feeling came over me like a warm blanket. I knew, somehow, that I had to stay alive. Somehow. I had to keep breathing. Even though there was no reason to hope. And all my logic said that I would never see this place again. So that's what I did. I stayed alive. I kept breathing. And one day my logic was proven all wrong because the tide came in, and gave me a sail. And now, here I am. I'm back. In Memphis, talking to you. I have ice in my glass... And I've lost her all over again. I'm so sad that I don't have Kelly. But I'm so grateful that she was with me on that island. And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?”

What's helped me is to find a routine and stick to it. Force yourself to accomplish your daily routine/schedule until this wave of depression recedes somewhat.

It's one thing to drag yourself out of bed and force yourself to start the day when you feel like shite. That's hard but doable, and most people can relate to it because we've all been there at one time or another, depression or not. What's difficult for the non-depressed to understand is that depression can frick with your executive function so that ordinary tasks are difficult or impossible. Your mind races, you can't concentrate, words on a page don't make sense. A person in that condition can't just get hold of themselves and snap out of it.

Exactly! I suggest that the OP gets a good nights rest (get in bed early since it gets dark so early) & get up before 6AM and go for a walk. Getting outdoors/exercise while the sun is coming up + cool temps in the morning can do alot for someones mental health. Great way to start the day.
