Anyone deal with this type of back issue?

Just got home from my neurologist about my back. I've known for years (actually the late 90's) I have a bad back but I've put off doing anything about it. Anyway, they did an MRI and said I've got a bulging and torn L4/L5 disc. The first thing he recommended was seeing another doctor that specializes in doing blocks. He said a block might work, but there are no guarantees. He said sometimes they work for a year or even years, other times they don't work at all. Also, and he did not address this issue, I'm wondering if a block would help with the stiffness I'm getting in my lower back as well.
Anyone here ever dealt with something similar and can give any advice?

When I was in my late 20s I had back problem like all hell. Bulging disc & sciatic nerve pain. It would be so bad I missed work for weeks at a time. They didn't have all this blocking ect back then. All the doctor ever did was give me pain pills and talk surgery. I tried chiropractors, not much help either. I would throw my back out every winter it seems like. Never knew how bad it would be. I thought I would have to live with that crap the rest of my life. Then one day a chiropractor told me to get rid of my wallet and start carrying a money clip in my front pocket. You wallet make you sit at an angle he said. I am not sure if that did it or not, But I will tell you today I am 54 years old and haven't had a back problem in the last 15- 20 years or so.

This! I had a ruptured disc in early 90's and ended up having it removed by one of the top Drs at Baylor Medical here in Houston. He said the exact same thing.

I went the block route but I needed two of them. This was 4 years ago; been fine since save a few flare ups.

Everybody has "bulging" discs.
Thats a nonspecific term that means nothing.
It is unlikely to cause pain unless they specifically say it is affecting a nerve root.
"Tears" of discs are also common and not necessarily a cause of pain.
An epidural wouldnt hurt and lots of people get relief from it.
Surgery is the absolute last option, I wouldnt let anybody operate on my back unless I couldnt walk.
Oh, and Darth, downvoted.

I went through the same thing several years ago. Herniated disc with sciatic pain that was horrible. Had two blocks and everything else that goes along. Finally went and saw a neurologist. Had surgery a few weeks later. I have been pain free with zero problems ever since. I'm back to doing everything I was doing prior to my injury. God bless Kelly Scrantz for fixing me!!

I second everything Cosmo said, but I would add the following indications for surgery: 1) incontinence of any kind, 2) dick or balls starting going numb.

Surgery is ALWAYS the last option for any Ortho doctor.
I have a low, "slippy" one and one day my back hurts, the next day my arse. I do NOT want surgery and I do NOT want pain pills. I wish a back were easier to fix. I feel your pain.

I'll let you know Wednesday. I'm going in for my "test block" and steroid injections at L4/L5. If that works my doc will do the permanent block in about a month. I have narrowing of the facet joints with bone spurs at L4/L5 and a torn but not buldging disc at L5/S1

I refused to have surgery until the whole incontinence issue showed up. After dealing with that for a few weeks, I knew it was time for surgery.

My dad has had a block done in November, so far so good. The dr said the next thing if it stopped working was to burn out the nerves in that area. That's my layman's translation of what the doc said, it may be a little off.

I have the same L4/5 - S1 herniated
I had a shot 4 yrs ago which lasted about 3 yrs. I just had another one Dec 28th and I'm doing good, just walked 2.4 miles with little or no leg pain.
Try the shot - if it doesn't work have surgery.
I also had surgery in 1999 and after yrs mine came back, I know your pain.

I just had L4/L5 fusion with "the cage" or spacer on December 21st. I'd been getting pain injections for about 5 years. Each one lasted shorter and shorter. I had a herniated and degenerative disk disease. My surgeon recommended waiting as long as possible also but the shots are expensive even with insurance. So far, I'm super happy with my back. I do have issues with my nerves but that should go away pretty soon. I would do again!

That's exactly what they do. What I am having done Wednesday is a steroid injection in my facet joints and a temporary block. The tempoary block is so they can make sure they have the correct nerve and don't block/burn one that will either give you zero relief or kill the feeling in your entire leg. That is supposed to last 6 hours or so and once they confirm they have the right nerve, he will go back in in about a month and do the permanent burn. My doc told me that the nerve will regenerate in a year or two so it's not really permanent and will have to be done again but at this point if I can get a year of relief and not have to take pain meds every day and not have to go through major back surgery, it's worth it.

Dealing with L4 now from coughing. I was into so much pain to were I couldn't walk. Saw stars and cried like a baby. 3 days in the hospital, they did a block. It was like relief within 8 hours and went home the next day. My left leg from my hip to my toes are still numb.
Had to go back in Oct for a second block. Still good, but the numbness is still there.
Now I went thru this crap with my neck. C5/6. The blocks didn't do shite and I had to have them fuse together. That has been over 15 years and all is good there.
