its lovely actually. for me, anyway. I sleep really well and have some crazy dreams. No memory loss so far. Its really taken my drinking to another level which is why im so pissed about it. No night terrors either. Like, frick, this is supposed to help me cope not make me want to drink more!

My coping mechanism and the desire to remain in a shite relationship so that I have my kids 100% of the time has led me here. Those that will say I could live a happy life without both parents, you haven't lost your kids or you have no idea how much I do and take care of my kids. They would not be who I'm raising them to be without me.
lotta truth in this thread. This might be the most honest thing anyone has said in it. Feel you. More than you know.

You seen anyone about it?
I do not want to do rehab, but am very interested in finding a doc that does CBT. I've just been lazy/procrastinating in going about it.

These guys seemed to genuinely enjoy each others company, most were over 50.
Thankfully my wife and almost everyone in my immediate family don't drink.
Want to talk 2020:
Rehab for over 90 days.
Resigned from a job in January.
Had my second child while I was in rehab, had a one day furlough from the facility to see her.
Went to sober living in May.
Got a job in June
Wrecking ever since

That was an automatic fist fight for me back in the day

I had this rare ability to talk my way out of handcuffs which came in handy a lot

Boy are you right about that.
I think at my peak I was spending $1,200 a month on Vodka alone. No clue how much per day, it didnt matter unless it wasnt enough.
The scariest feeling is if you underestimated what you needed to buy on Saturday (I live in Texas).
Sundays can become really really expensive. In hindsight taking the family to the movies just so I could get as many doubles as I could handle was incredibly stupid.
Man the stories of where to hide shite never ends.

Without going to bars, I probably spent 300-400 a month on booze. I was cheap, most alcohol per volume/price
When I went to bars, I would easily do that in a weekend.

And there are alternatives to AA. It's not a one size fits all type thing. I'm not an AA fan. But there's refuge recovery, which is buddhist based, SMART recovery, which is CBT based, and others. For those of you thinking about making a change, look around and find something that fits and works for you. Lots of zoom meetings these days too where you can log in and watch anonymously to just feel it out, if that's more palateable to you.

At first i would buy small. Small is expensive.
As the addiction worsens you eventually say screw it grab the biggest bottle then transfer to water bottles etc.
Everyday and I mean everyday I was spending between 20-40.
The $1,200 is calculated by adding drinks at restaurants. I had separate accounts setup to hide money from the wife. She lets me handle all the finances so that was easy.
Some may say Im full of it but trust me thats a cheap addiction brothers. Go talk to the homies that have opioid problems. I honestly felt bad for some of those guys but the respect was mutual. Everyone in there was hurting emotionally, physically, mentally .

The first time I went to treatment I had two trash bags of empty plastic pint bottles that I collected from being stashed around my house. I only got pints because in the morning that was all I was going to drink that day, then a second at lunch was all I was going to drink, that third at dinner was going to be the last, rinse and repeat the next day. I did that shite for years, pure fricking insanity

Yes AA does not have a monopoly on recovery. Good post

Yes, been in therapy for over a year now. My doc and therapist both think i need to get out more. I think they get mad at me because im good at putting on a front but they know im not well. Then i changed therapy providers and they didnt even call to check on me.
If theres one thing i learned is that mental health is just one big transaction. You have to share so many intimate details and you feel like you are developing a relationship but the minute the money dries up or you say you arent getting the help you need from them they turn their backs on you real quick.

Such a familiar story. I'm just going to buy this pint and that's all I'll drink today. And when the pint runs out, it's another trip to the store for another pint, and another, and another. So many of these stories you guys are telling, I could have written myself.

You aint lying hundreds of times i told myself this just to end up worse. Keeping tabs on where everyone is at when your home is exhausting.

Five times for alcohol. Once in 2012. Three times in 2015. Completed three, walked out of two. The last one, a 95-day visit to Palmetto in Rayville from Aug-Dec 2015 did the trick. Been good ever since. Atpooed too late in the game though. I already had cirrhosis and ended up needing a liver transplant a few years later. I strongly recommend Palmetto, if you ever need help. Forget all of the 30-day BS. It doesn't help.

Any Length Retreat in Austin is legit.
Not totally orthodox and you will get uncomfortable, which is what you need. Youll look at yourself different for sure. These arent psych majors, these guys are all former addicts.
