Planning a trip in May and wondering which campground(s) to try and stay at.
Any big positive and negative outside of the ammendities. Looking at canyon village just because of central local and it offers everything.
But we dont mind vault toilets and no showers for a few days if there are some prettier spots.

No but I have visited the travel board. Great folks over there.

Yes we camped. We also did canvas under the stars - which are large canvas tents with showers, stove etc

Probably will get better responses on Travel Board.
Went to Yellowstone in September and opted not to camp for the following reasons.
Grizzlies
Black Bears
Cost of having to check all that gear to get out there
It's pretty expensive to camp around Canyon village anyways. I camp a decent amount and am fairly savvy, but for us; it just wasn't worth the hassle.
Hotels in West Yellowstone are expensive though. Where are flying into?

My dad lives in colorado, so we are flying into denver and meeting him there. Then driving up after a day in RMNP. We will fly out of salt lake and leave the kids with my dad for a few weeks so they can hit up southern utah.
He has most of the gear we need. Only having to ship out a tent and a few other things which I'll do ahead of time and he'll bring back with the kids.

ahh that sounds pretty reasonable then.
I was flying out with my dad and brother so trying to not check bags, it just made more sense to spring for hotels.
It should be awesome in May.

Going friday of memorial weekend and staying til the next Sunday.
Looks like all the roads will be open by then, so should be a great time to go. Having to buy a few extra warm weather things for just in case

Are you set on Yellowstone? I’ve been in late May and we were disappointed to find a good portion of the park was still closed from snow. If it were me, I’d prefer southern Utah

I am jealous. We did 5 days with some fishing and spent a day in Grand Tetons. Could have stayed a couple of weeks. Such an awesome trip.

Book now. I worked in Canyon Village for a summer if you need any tips
Youre not going to find a bad campsite in the park. It just depends what you want to be close to, really.
My personal favorites are Madison (right on the Madison River for some great fishing) and close to firehole falls and west yellowstone.
Second would probably be Slough Creek...it is closest to Lamar Valley, which is where you will see a lot of pronghorn, bison, and probably a couple bears.. also the best part of the park for cutthroat trout.

Yes, definitely want to do yellowstone. According to the site all the roads should be open by the time we go. Of course I suppose heavy late snow could change that.

I’m sure it’ll be great then. The year we went must’ve been an outlier

May seems a little early for Yellowstone. Its probably going to be very cold for camping. I stayed in a cabin just north of Yellowstone in Montana, in early June, and it was frigid at night and pretty chilly during the day.
Id wait until July/August

How busy is it in late may. I plan to book probably canyon or Madison. Slough would be nice, but I think itll still be closed then.
Was thinking about going up to tower falls for a night or two to be close to lamar. But am kinda afraid we wont find a spot unless we leave canyon and head straight up there really early.

Bring a coat and a 4 season tent. There’s still tons of snow on the ground in May and some of the park isn’t open to traffic.

Late may, expecting highs in the low 60s and lows in the thirties. Prepared for lows in the teens. I've been in june and july before. My family has never been though. And work just wont permit us to go in june or july.

Is this tent camping? Do you have winter camping gear?

Yes.
the grand Tetons are better.
Asking if someone has camped in Yellowstone is basically saying hey man have you ever camped in Connecticut. The park is bigger than Rhode Island.
Skip the geyser and all the BS at yellowstone and drive south 10 miles to the Grand Tetons. It is better. Watch out for mooses or meese whatever the plural for of is. They are mean AF.
