Be sure to check ahead of time which entrances are open to traffic. Sometimes the East entrance near Cody Wyoming doesn't open until July due to snow. The southern entrance should be open though, but again check. Be sure you store food and do any cooking in a different area/tent well away from the tent you are sleeping in at night. Grizzly bears are real, a threat, and will be coming out of hibernation around then.

I’ve camped most places at Yellowstone and you can’t go wrong with either Madison or Canyon. I’d suggest Canyon because you’re right by Hayden Valley where I saw a grizzly bear in August plus there’s a ton of wildlife and you’re right by the falls and the lake isn’t far. Plus if you’re planning on heading to slough you’re right by the road leading up there ( if it’s open) so you’ll have a head start on getting there before anybody.

Closed until 2022. :(

That's the only thing that I didnt like about canyon is that road is closed so you have to go up and around to get to lamar valley.

Consider that you will have sporadic phone service to no phone service in Yellowstone. I had phone service for the most part of Grand Tetons. Yellowstone was almost non-existent. If being able to call for assistance is something that is important to you, Yellowstone is going to be a challenge.

Grand Tetons has some great trails and lakes. Hidden Falls was one of the better trails we hiked. And the Devil's Staircase leads you to the top of Phelp's lake.

Hidden falls in Grand Teton's has a trail that goes around Jenny Lake, I don't know if the trout will be biting or the lake will be thawed out even by then. The falls are worth seeing on a hike though if you choose to stay in the Tetons.

That sucks. I’d still stay at canyon though because there’s more to do on that side and it’s equidistant from the Norris turnoff you’d have to take to go up through mammoth.

ETA: or just book a few days at each. That’s what I did my first time.

Also, get your old man to read up on the Forrest Fenn treasure. I’m almost positive it’s in Yellowstone somewhere and it’s fun to look for while you’re driving around trying to interpret every clue.

Yeah, think we will stay at canyon most of the time. If we move itll be to towerfalls I think for a night or two.

Would like to get up early and already be in lamar valley one day. Slough will still be closed while we are there.
