I approached it with skepticism, as I almost never finish anything I start.

But I have flying through these lessons and expect to be proficient in Italian by the time I go to Italy in May. It's actually fun.

I just sit on my patio with a cocktail every evening and do like 15 minutes.

I downloaded it but haven't started on anything.

May start learning German just so I can make fun of reposts here.

Watch a bunch of old WW2 movies and you’ll learn a lot of Italian.

As a Cajun I'd really like to learn more French, this is a pretty encouraging OP for that. How much does it cost?

Currently learning French by it myself. Really enjoyable and interactive

It’s a free app. There’s an up charge for a premium version of it but I see no real need for it. I’ll stay with the free part

Any idea what the premium version is about? Specific dialects?

It's a free app. I tried the french and struggled with the pronunciation. Some words were easy but some were extremely difficult to understand what they were saying, as in how they were forming the word.

For the free version there are some Ads ( however I exit out of them quickly each time ) ... you get 5 hearts a day... like a video game... miss something or get answer incorrect.. you lose a heart.... a good incentive to get stuff right to keep learning for the day

Premium version appears to have no penalties for missing answers so its unlimited hearts and no ads.

I’m almost through the French course. You’ll be good enough to read Italian, but I wouldn’t expect to understand their spoken word. You really need an immersion element to get to that point. My buddy who learned multiple languages in college said that watching television in that language helps towards that end.

I've being using it for French for about a year now. I had taken French in high school and college, and kind of want to refresh my knowledge of it since it had been years ago. I've gotten through all the lessons, but not up to Level 5 on all of them.

I’ve been using it and love it. Another app to combine with Duolingo is Drops, which I find is another fun way to learn vocabulary.

ETA using Premium version for both above apps

I am learning Russian, just for fun. It’s a good challenge without being seemingly impossible, like Mandarin the Latin-based languages are not enough of a challenge to keep my interest. Russian fits right in between, and I’ve found it to be enjoyable to learn, albeit obviously impractical.

I tried Duolingo but it didnt help me much. But then I tried out Paul Noble's audio book teaching Italian and it was much better for me. I listened to it on the way to work everyday for about 4 months and was actually able to hold full Italian conversations while in Italy
