This is nothing new. These ocean trash piles have been around for years.

I actually passed this spot in Santo Domingo a couple months ago. It’s actually right where The Ozama river empties into the Caribbean Sea.

I’ve seen stuff like this all over the world. Waste management, for whatever reason, seems to confound third world governments.

Just went to the Damajagua waterfalls near Puerto Plata a few weeks ago. Beautiful scenery but the bus ride to and from was the dirtiest part of this planet I have ever seen.

Trash and litter along the highway was by far the worst I have ever seen - made Mexico seem clean in comparison.

I know most of the population is poor by American standards, but the Dominican government should do something about the trash.

Much of it is the people for sure. Much of it is stray dogs everywhere that get into bagged trash. Most of it is chicken shite public sanitation

Most of that trash comes from Haiti, however DR isn’t much better. Their roads are full of trash. They literally have no trash collection services or landfills. I mean, it’s a 3rd World Country. What do you expect?

They are so freakin poor, we actually saw a families of 5 riding on mopeds. Daddy in the front, 3 kids squished in the middle and mommy on the back.

Tell you one thing though, they were the nicest and happiest people. Much more happy than Americans considering their situation.

It was a very eye opening experience spending a week down there not just sipping Presidentes at the resort. We went off the resort and got to mingle with the locals quite a bit.

I took the bus from Santa Domingo through Puerto Plata several years ago. I have never seen anywhere with so much litter in there rivers. Once you get into the interior, there's garbage filling every stream I saw. It was sad.

Was in Punta Cana in June. On the bus from the airport to the resort we were heading down a pretty narrow and curvy road and we pulled up on an accident with a moped. Guy from the moped was laying in the middle of the road and they were covering him up with palm tree leaves. Was pretty crazy to see that.
