I never understood how it worked. How could all of the trades be made, with none missed, and be done accurately and on time?

That’s what always intrigued me because everybody just screaming throwing up numbers but it’s a lot of people doing the same thing at the same time. I would have definitely screwed it up lol.

The amount of cocaine used in that room is worthy of a case study

I spent a day on the trading floor of the NYSE in the late 80’s. It was wild.
The jacket colors were a color coded scheme so you knew who you dealing with
Amazing time. The internet ate Wall Street. And Texas is where it is regrouping.

Throwing up numbers and handing off pieces of paper with handwritten trades on them. People trying to listen and write down trades while holding 100 trade slips. Etc.
It's just bedlam. How in the world did everything get done correctly?

In the case of FCOJ futures, the real pit was just 2 or 3 guys reading the newspaper and waiting for something to happen.
I'd be surprised if there weren't mistakes at the busier pits.

The entertainment value of Louis and Billy Ray aside, the current market is generally more efficient. Decimalization and automation have narrowed spreads a lot.

quote:The guys in the pics giving hand signs and yelling were usually trading futures/commodities. The room wasn't one enormous free-for-all in which everyone traded everything. Stocks were assigned to particular locations. If you wanted IBM, you went to the IBM location. If you wanted GM, you went to the GM location. And they even had an electronic system for stock trading pre-internet going back to the late 70s or 80s.
