I started cracking teeth about 3 years ago, ended up with two or three root canals and four or five crowns. Dentist said I was breaking them at night from grinding my teeth and fitted me for a custom splint. Fast forward a year and no more cracked teeth but the splint was missing pieces and worn down. He fitted me for a different brand/type and so far so good. Had an appointment last week and all is good. If you are breaking teeth might need a splint. Mine works great.

You are paying more for the care of diagnosis, follow ups, adjustments that come with night guards. While some can be straight forward, there is a good bit of nuance that goes into those things and potential troubleshooting down the road.
That being said, we make ours in my office and only charge about $260 for them bc I’d rather almost everyone wear one to protect their teeth, and I don’t want a prohibitive cost to be a barrier for people who would benefit from it.

Thank you all for the feedback. I ended up ordering the one the dentist recommended. It was like $700 with tax but it’s made from hard acrylic. I know they make like 1000% but I rather just trust the dentist and it’s FSA money. Real money but we over designated this year anyway.
My wife also told me she is dealing with grinding at night and we are going get her one that’s OTC this thread recommended to start until she can go to a proper dentist at her next cleaning interval.
This thread was such a help. Thanks.

Grinding is horrid, especially at night. It gets worse if you are stressed and actually can make you stressed.
Generally happens if your teeth don’t align right too. I had a broken tooth fixed and the surgeon decided to fix my “cosmetic” gap with the other front tooth. That effed up my bite as the other teeth shifted and led to 25 years of grinding away my teeth (mostly my molars). Dentists are always shocked when they see my teeth but wearing the guards helped slow it down dramatically.
Might cause some jaw discomfort at first but that goes away. Just make sure it fits right because if it doesn’t, it can actually make things much worse.

I use the football mouthguard for $1 at walmart and just replace it every so often and it works great.

I grind and pop my teeth restlessly non stop but only my oil drilling rig roommates complained about it so I told them to shuv their heads up their asses or wear soft rig provided ear plugs. Once I tried to have a live in relationship with a woman , she complained incessantly about my teeth grinding so I went to my co-pay MD to try and make her happy. I was given a mouth device to get used to and it was rough and uncomfortable. Doctor said it comes from stress and Suppressed rage.

My doctor suggested that I start getting Botox in my jaw to keep me from grinding through the night guard. Has anyone tried that?
My dentist recommended it also. We were hopeful it might "train" me to stop the grinding over time. Didn't work on me. I may be willing to try it again, though. She mentioned a higher dosage or something along those lines.

I wore one for a year or so. I developed TMJ(let BJ comments commence). The pain manifested in my molars. I assumed I had a bad tooth. The dentist suggested I go see a chiropractor. Xrays showed out of line spine and everything else just worked it's way up. The grinding was probably stress related. The chiropractor used a technique called graston to work out my jaws. Once I got the stress under control I tried life without the mouthpiece and the issues had cleared up.
All that to say there may be more to look into.
