In Terrytown during those days.

All the same:)

Flash floods were party time!!!!

Yellow Barqs cans, TG&Y runs (store always had a smell of hope), the glorious purple of K&B (can still feel the pressure pad opening the gates) come to memory as does Land of the Lost and Saturday cartoons. Remember the greasy cub scouts eating chicken on Popeyes and Pals?

Least we forget when Showbiz pizza first showed up in the late 70’s. Was an absolute wonder of the world.

Not that I gave a shite, but I vividly remember the day Elvis died in 1977. Was doing a Hot Wheels “show” at a buddy’s house and his mom lost it.

Central here. In 80 81 ish. Rode our bikes on summer night to central high from Comite hills. Saw one car that we hid from.

I lived on Plaunchet around that time. Knew a bunch of guys in Comite Hills. I now live by Stab's, got married to my middle school crush in August.

What a small world it has become. I have been reunited with a lot of my Central friends.

a few more that I can’t remember.
I played for the Jackson Park Bobcats (in Central) and they sucked. Bad. My dad decided to drive me 20-25 minutes every day to Park Forest to play for the Pirates.

Wow. I wasn’t a part of that war. I only lived in raintree apartments for about 6-8 months in 1976-77 (2nd grade). We moved right next door to one of the duplexes with our backyard touching the top of the giant ditch. I can’t believe we played in that disgusting ditch/creek.

I’m pretty sure there was no team with Rams as a mascot when I played from 76-79. I could be wrong though. I also remember that Our division winner played the other division winner in the toys for tots bowl.

Oh yeah, in '75 at this bar, Del Lago’s Smackwater Jack's .... first time I ever did cocaine. One of the last times too. My girlfriend at the time at Carolina was this smokeshow (older woman, early 30s) from BR named Sophie. She came from a wealthy BR family .... I was ten years younger than her. She taught me the ropes. She worked for the university. Coach Dietzel had brought her here when he came from Army.

Anyways, I over imbibed that night, doing the blow and drinking too much ... I threw up at 3AM in the parking lot. First time I ever got that f'd-up in my young life. She took care of me though. She ended up marrying an attorney in Columbia a couple of years later .... gorgeous, special, woman.

I would imagine that a lot of people threw up in BR in the 70s though .... it was a happenin' place. It seemed, to me at least, to have a much more big city vibe than did Columbia at the time. Especially where the night life was concerned. More readily accessible drugs as well ... which kinda caught me off guard at that age.

We drive back to Columbia and I felt like a different man.

Yes. It used to be out in the middle of no where which is why it was a cool place to have things. Camp Beau Bois by Wildwood Subdivision was another place to have cool parties.

I don't remember the Rams during PeeWee ball, but when we started Junior ball('81-'83) we played the Rams. Some of the kids that were bussed into Southeast middle school from the McKinley area played for the Rams.

I didn’t want to bring that up but I was in 6th grade at Twin oaks and there was a beautiful girl with long hair that loved Elvis Presley. We used to tease her about fat Elvis etc. But she cried all day and I think her mom had to check her out and we all felt so bad for her.

In thinking about the 70s kids they never really show is that we not only supported each other and were independent, self sufficient, tribal and tough but we had tremendous empathy for each other. Even the kids from the rival neighborhoods or teams.

For example, That kid was really sorry he busted my head with a rock because he knew I had to go to hospital and it hurt and may get into trouble. I left bad for him because he was scared, crying and I didn’t want him to get into trouble. None of us wanted parents or authorities involved. Nobody, because nothing good for us ever happened then. I am sure I was gone but when
Those cops came if he did come that place would have been empty and any kid he talked to would have been “what fight, there was no dirt dubber fight. Blood of a kid was on street skakes or got hit with a lawn dart but his parents picked him up and took him to the doctor and I think that was yesterday. Back then cops really didn’t mess with us anyway. (Unless you one of those hippie dope smokers lol)

Ahh Nostradamus then you were one of us. Goodwood gang maybe?

That wasn’t a dirty drainage ditch that was an incredible world to explore. We build bridges etc all over it Right on the other side of it in the middle was a really cool 3-5 acre swamp pond that people would go to get high, make out, fish etc. We used to catch tons of snakes too. At the end of street was one of the Klienpeter farms, he had a mean bull and sometimes Shetland ponies we would feed through the fence. He has a concrete bridge over it to his place that was loaded with fish, and probably some great fishing ponds too but somehow my mom knew him and we were all prohibited from tooling around his property, not just me somehow all the neighborhood kids. I don’t think he was mean or anything just scared we would get hurt or something. We didn’t care for rules and generally ignored them but this one we honored, I am not sure why so that was the edge of our territory.

There was a cracker barrel on other side of that swamp. We used to”the drainage ditch” as our highway all over Baton Rouge. There were trails everywhere back then. It was nothing for us to go 5 miles in one direction using them with our bikes sometimes 10 miles or more. (You had to get off your bike someplaces) Through boys scouts or some shite at least half of us had machetes to help cut paths. But right behind your house we had tons of cut paths.

Rarely did we ever run into anyone else in these “ditches” but typically was just another group of explorers like us and never any trouble. We would just trade stories and Info as we were all looking for the fabled nudie campground, blue hole pond for swimming, hidden satanic church or stocked fishing ponds. (We did find a stocked pond once) No one ever bothered us.

Damn good times, there were tons of wooded area in Baton Rouge back then and 70s kids explored every single acre

I had an older girl too story too she was like 14 or 15, and I was 12. She wanted me bad, so of course I ignored her to play with my buddies. She would show me her tits and get naked at drop of a hat, which scared me. Plus I wanted to hang out with my buddies and didn’t want a girlfriend. (I had reached full puberty but I had no clue what do do with it)

I played for the Old Jefferson Lions (we sucked) and the PAL Panthers ( didn’t suck as much). I remember getting our asses whooped by the Bengals and the Broncos. I also remember playing the Sherwood Hawks, Sherwood Falcons, Park Forest Pirates, and the Broadmoor Bucs.

Also have fond memories of American Legion baseball out of Forest Park.

Those were the days, baws!
