How do you find a good one? Would prefer in person but wouldn't rule out telehealth. Would consider something like Talkspace but I've read those sites are mostly rookies who havent built up their own practices yet. I expect some smart-arse answers but hopefully some relevant info too.

Nah. If I have a problem, I talk to the wad. The wad always knows.

I’m not sure of your city, but here’s a link to grief support resources in Baton Rouge. They might be able to help you find a good fit. The group meetings could be helpful as well.

Not a psychiatrist but me, the wife and daughter all see an LPC a few times a year. We started by asking our church who they recommended and went from there. Wanted to find someone close, that was aligned spiritually, philosophically, etc and had ability for virtual visits when needed.

My heart goes out to you, baw. My wife is my best friend and I’ve now officially lived more of my life with her than without her and if she goes first, I’m going to be a basket case for a while. I hope you find the peace that you deserve.

Look on websites like Zocdoc. You could start out with the telehealth apps like betterhelp. It helped me tremendously man. There’s nothing wrong with talking to someone, I know you’re going through a lot

I went to one after losing my wife.
I had never been to a therapist before.

I found her through local references.

I was really struggling, and she was awesome.
I am a Christian, and I truly believe she was instrumental in getting me back on track. No drugs, great counselor, and she's an LSU fan.
I went to her for about nine months.

Look for a local agency, not a national one

Mine for ptsd basically told me my brains just wired differently now and that all i can do is try to remember i can't control other people when they do stupid shite that sets me off.

I think they're all trained just to affirm everyones problems and not fix them.

Silver lining he helped me realize im a different person when i didnt have to deal with lazy people at work every day. Made early retirement decision easier.

I saw someone after mom died. I found her on psychology today by searching for a grief specialist.

Accepting your “problems” is the first step to “fixing” them, though.

If you have insurance see who they cover. If you find a list of ones covered they usually have a little bio on what they specialize in.

Best of luck and frick anyone who makes a smart arse comment.

Not currently. I’ve tried a couple of times but never found the right fit for a long term thing which is needed - when we were going through infertility I did seek counseling and one lady lasted a bit but it was just a vent session on my part. Look into any benefits you may have through work to help with costs as I’ve found that mental health is rarely covered by traditional insurances

If you are using insurance, check to see who is in your network.

I'm gonna be real honest here; I thought therapy was for weak people who couldn't get through life's challenges without Xanax.

I was foolish and uneducated on the topic.

In the right circumstances, a good therapist is like any other educated medical practitioner and can really help.
