Why not just let your faucet drip? Seems much easier.

Unless you drain the water out of the pipes, this wont do anything.

This....And what will you do when you need water during the "end of the world cold weather". What the hell is so difficult about wrapping the spigots with a towel or two? Why do people always have to try and reinvent the wheel?

Shutting the water off without draining the lines may not prevent freezing but if the line freezes the resulting water damage will be minimal.

maybe but there would still be water in them.

The pipes do not have to be totally empty. Pipes burst because when the water inside them freezes it expands. If the pipe is not full and there is only a little water in there then if it freezes it won't expand enough to damage the pipes.

It took way to long for someone to say this. As long as the water/ice has somewhere to expand the pipes should not get damaged. Turning off the main and opening a faucet or two should be more than enough to protect you home.

Correct. I'm not sure why all the folks are talking about "reinventing the wheel" and crap. This takes all of about 30 seconds to do and is certainly enough to protect the pipes.

exactly
If you are leaving town, or just really paranoid, turn off the main and open a faucet to drain the system, the water left in the system won’t hurt. If you will be home, let a faucet or two drip

Both hot and cold water, furthest away from water supply to the house

I've had plumbing work done at my house during a renovation we've been working on, so I've had to completely drain the pipes. I have a shutoff valve in my garage. He said to cut that off, and run whatever the lowest faucet was in the house and it would drain. That is the hose faucet out back which is low to the ground. Turn the knob on the shutoff then go turn the hose on and within a minute all the water was gone. Yeah there will be a little left in the pipes, but not enough to freeze to the point where the pipes burst.

If you do, be sure and drain the pipes. One of my employees did that in that freeze a couple of weeks ago and all his pipes froze and burst.
