Backed into it while turning the wheel.

Old person backed out of parking spot by carts. Kept going quickly in reverse until hitting pole with rear of car. Kept the foot on the gas and spun the front end around up onto the grass and curb.

The sign is held up by a yellow concrete post barely visible above the trunk. That's why the sign didn't just fold over and the trunk collapsed.
The driver apparently was backing into the spot, panicked, and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake while the steering wheel was turned. This led to the car whipping around sideways.
