Was driving my 2013 f150 this morning. Was fine then made one stop. Went to leave and truck drove but wasn't showing any mph only rpms. Wouldn't shift out of 1st. It would go in reverse etc. Finally put it in manual and was able to drive. Put back into D and speedometer was working again. Is transmission failing? Was gonna get new truck soon but was hoping to wait til new f150s came out.

I’m absolutely not an expert. But I don’t really see how the speedometer not working would be related to the transmission. However it not shifting out of 1st seems like a transmission issue. When you put it back into drive and the speedometer starting working again... was it shifting normally again at that point as well?

Yes, once I got it going again, it seemed to shift normally and I was able to make it home.

Louisiana Transmission on Plank Road if you're in Baton Rouge. I have a 2013 F-150, and hope I don't have this problem.

Seems like the speed sensor is failing.
If the truck was not reading the speed it does not know when to shift to the next gear, down etc.
When you put it in manual it was shifting because you were commanding a gear. Typically trucks do not care about 1 to second gear in manual, but i would find it a little odd if it let you go beyond those gear in manual without it knowing the speed.

Unsure where said sensor is, but I would do a quick google search see if its worth changing real quick.

I had similar issues with my 2008 2500 HD. I waited to bring it in because, just like you, it would always start working normal again.

Ended up costing 4400 to rebuild the tranny.

Moral of the story: have a professional look at it before more damage is done.

speedometers may work different these days, I know the speedometer cable at one time, and maybe still on many cars connect to the transmission. A gear on the main shaft of the transmission is home to the internal speedometer gear, the cable connects to what is called a bullet that contains a smaller gear that rides on the internal gear, and turns the cable and makes the speedometer work. I'm sure that some if not all newer model vehicles have speedometers that work electronically now.

The 2013 F150 has a recall for a intermittent transmission output speed sensor signal which would cause the transmission to abruptly shift down to 1st gear. This isn't your problem but is does indicate that the speed sensor in the model is problematic. You could take it to ford and possibly get a free diagnosis under the recall.

Ford has identified various causal factors of an intermittent transmission output speed sensor signal in this population of vehicles, including contamination, power short to ground, connector corrosion, connector pin swaging, and incorrect outputs from the OSS. Some vehicles may experience an intermittent loss of the transmission OSS signal within the powertrain control module, potentially resulting in a temporary, unintended downshift into first gear.

Its at the dealer now. Supposedly they knew about the recall. Working on it now, hopefully it will be covered by the recall.
