Can a slow leak inside a house cause a leak at the water meter outside?
I'm not sure I'm getting a correct answer from our water company. It seems pretty clear that we have a small but steady leak at our meter in our front yard. Water company came out and said the leak isn't on their side of the meter so we should check for leaks in the house. I've yet to identify one although one of our toilets might be leaky.

It could be on your side of the meter. That's your responsibility.

Yeah so that's what I'm worried about. The water company said I probably have a leak inside the house but didn't make sense to me that the water would be leaking at the meter in the yard.

What he's saying is a leak downstream of the meter, even at the meter, if your responsibility.

Any wet spots in the yard? I've had the supply line to leak.

Typically one leak would not cause another leak. Just dig up around the meter. It is usually screw pipe, not hard to fix.

I know it's my responsibility just didn't want to chase down leaks in the house if the issue was in the yard. I'll have someone come take a look.
Yes, my yard is wet but seems to only be near the meter so hopefully not too far from that point.
Appreciate the input. The water company just didn't seem to think it would be a pipe in my yard on my side of meter. They were convinced it was a toilet inside but we don't have any leaks that I have discovered.

Water moves and accumulates in a low spot. Leak could be up the line from the meter considerable distance. Can you see any deposits of sand by any chance in your yard where it's wet?

Check all of your toilets. Turn off the angle stops for the toilets and go check the meter.

No sand but the meter box if full of water and rusty colored so the water coming out the yard into the street has a rust color. No color changes to water in the house.

You can turn all the water off to your house for about an hour or two and know for sure if the leak is on your side or the city's.

You can always call American Leak Detection, probably cost about $300 and they can pinpoint the issue...

Hello?

Are there any plumbers out there?
Just post if you can hear me
Are there any near my home?

Come on down
Something is leaking now
Well I can fix you're pipes
Get your meter right again

Relax

I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
I'll prepare you for the worst.

The waters yet to be receding
A small leak can be a massive problem
Youll have to replumb your whole house
The leaks bad, but I can make it gone
When I cut through walls, you know it's on
But I don't repair sheet rock that's someone else
Now I'll get my aliens to work
I can't speak to them, they would not understand
This is not their land

But iiiiiii have come, to masterfully plumb

Can it cause a leak at the water meter? No. Will any leak cause your meter to run? Absolutely, as it should.

Why do you say this, is your lawn wet near your meter? Or are you saying this because your meter is running constantly?

ETA: Started typing prior to your answers to other posts, I see now you do have a wet spot in the yard.

Anywhere passed their meter is on you, that's how it is everywhere I've ever been. If you have a continually wet spot, it is likely in the supply line in the wet area of your yard.

A leaky toilet can use more water than people realize.

If you're worried about it, either dig up around that area or call a leak detection company. They are not scams, however, they can only find one leak in one area at a time. Sometimes they will locate a leak, plumber will repair, and then there will be another pinhole leak 2 ft the other way. This is common with slab leaks.

You should have a shut off before the water line enters your house. Turn that off, then go see if the meter is spinning. If so, the leak is between meter and house. If it's not spinning, open the valve at the house, make sure everything is turned off, and if it's spinning then, you have a leak in your house. You would likely notice a leak in the house, unless as you mentioned a toilet is running.

Appreciate the input and the excellent rhyme/song of a plumber. Looks like the leak is between the house and meter so digging up the yard
