I had some friends that lived there for 2 years and couldn't get back home fast enough. Getting goods took forever and then it was that hurricane season where the V.I. got hit with 3 or 4 hurricanes in a 3 week span. They didn't have power for months. They said when it's good down there it's heaven on earth. Buy the bad and/or inconvenient is REALLY shitty.

Went there for a week 2 years ago...

1. Majority of the locals seemed at poverty level.
2. The restaurants they had were very costly.
3. Grocery shopping is a nightmare. They never have much of anything.
4. The terrain and driving/navigation is miserable.
5. Not shite to do unless you want to live on the ocean or at the beach.

Beautiful place, good local food, not somewhere I'd want to retire.

Agree with King Bob . I know a few people who moved there to work at the chemical plant. Not the island paradise life you would think. Horror stories about crime. I think you have to really wealthy to enjoy it. I would look into other places.

Spent time in St Croix, would not want to live there just due to crime.

I love St. John, but enjoy no running water, extreme poverty, people sucking their teeth at you, mosquitoes, no fresh produce, and very hot summers.

It’s probably awesome if you’re rich.

Edit: also extreme car sickness if you ever try to touch your phone while riding in a car.

Charlotte Amalie is crime ridden after dark. During the day while the cruise ships are in is safe but after they pull out you need to stay on the beaten path and not get too drunk.

If you want to go down a rabbit hole, research the murder of Kelsey Grammer’s father or the mass murder at a golf course, both on St Croix in the late 60’s, early 70’s.

I think some people think the US Virgin Islands are the same as Jamaica, Haiti, or the DR. St. Thomas felt very safe to me (for a carribean island). Views are great, but having to drive 15-20 minutes to go two miles (as the crow flies) to the beach would get old, due to the elevation/terrain. Not too many beach areas either. Would probably get bored and become an alcoholic after a month there.

Are there some non-U.S. Virgin Islands?

Yes. They’re called the British Virgin Islands and they are no less expensive. Neither are the French and British West Indies. Island living is not cheap.

St. Johns on the west part of the usland is where you want to go. St. Thomas has an area that takes a bit to get to on the northwest part of the island if you have money, and then areas near Red Hook on the southeast portion of the island is also more touristy, but where mainlanders move to. Crime and poverty are issues on any of those islands.
