I have this metal retainer on the back of my bottom teeth, im 35 Ive had this since I was like 12 its definitely held its own, anyways it just broke in half during dinner and its bothering me, can i just pull it off with pliers or do I need to just wait till the morning and see someone? Its bothersome but not painful, but if I want to pull it off

would that cause damage?

How do I get whatever adhesive thats holding it down off?

do I even need to go back to a dentist/orthodontist tomorrow and put another one on? I imagine things have changed in that last 20+ years of dentistry

thanks again, this all just happened during dinner a little while ago and i can feel the wire everytime my tongue moves its annoyin

This happened to me a few weeks ago.... Pull out the wire of you can and get a nail file and smooth the cement... Don't waste your time going to the orthodontist

It might be easier to have someone do it for you, I had to

Teeth haven't moved either

Exact same thing happened to me in my late 20s. I went to my regular dentist who removed it and filed the glue off.

Pull it off with your fingers if you can. Catch it with a fingernail.

A dentist should polish off the adhesive. The hygienist will ruin her instruments trying to get it off

Don't bother replacing it

I'm a dentist

If it is that annoying pull it off. But be forewarned it may just need to be repaired which is a lot cheaper than replacement. If you have some wax put it in there so it doesn't cut your tongue. Also see a dentist/orthodontist soon. Bones carry memory of where the teeth were, and they will go back if not retained in there current position. Retention is for life. It may take a while (probably years) but when they do shift back the only way to fix it is to go back through orthodontic therapy.

Hey lsu tiger dds you clearly are a dentist, what exactly should I do when I go in tomorrow I know this dentist is probably going to charge an arm and a leg. Is this a simple fix or is it a really costly endeavor? I'm not worried about the money I just don't want it to be some nominal thing that takes 5 minutes but the dentist says I need a one and it's hundreds or thousands. The little metal retainer just split in half that's all, it lasted me a good 23 years lol

What determines braces that come off vs those that are permanent?

I dated a dentist. Was the loveliest snatch I ever tasted. Pristine. I loved that snatch.

Three options:

Take it off yourself if you can and have your tongue rubbed raw from the bonding.

Go to the orthodontist or dentist and have it repaired or replaced.

Go to the orthodontist or dentist and have a removable retainer made.

First option is free.

Second option will be the least expensive because it doesn't have a lab fee associated with it.

Third option is the most expensive, requires the most cost and cooperation from the patient to wear it so that the teeth do not move.

Probably 150-200$ for option two to 350$ for option three.

Is it normal to keep an appliance like that in one's mouth for 22 years?

I've honestly never heard of that. What is the purpose?
