What do suggest as the safest route, assuming regular snow in the north?

Exactly that. I-10 to LA, then I-5 to the NW.

I 80 crossing into California from Nevada can turn treacherous in an instant.

Yeah. It was epic. 0 degrees and 70 mph winds on I-80

I find it exciting to travel in bad weather. It's an adventure

Yeah I would avoid that stretch. It can suck.

I'd rather pick a window of good weather and go via 70/80/90 than fight traffic all the way up the spine of California. Barring a blizzard you'll be fine.

Edited as I didn’t realize it was NW.

25 north to Cheyanne, 80 to SLC, 15 up to Butte, 90 to Spokane

Great roads all the way. Everything else will be a circular route.

If you go I-5 the only place you have to worry about snow is in the Mt Shasta area. Otherwise the drive is pretty easy.

I drove from Seattle to NOLA in January.. went I5 to 10 and across, got stuck in Bakersfield for for 2 days because of snow, was very unexpected. Partied hard though, had just gotten out of the Navy, was an awesome road trip. Pulling a uhaul trailer too.

Drove through the Grand Canyon during a snow storm. Wasn’t fun.

I once drove I-25 to I-90 in January the day before LSU beat OU for the national championship. I drove through snow from Just south of Denver to Seattle.

I10 don't go to San Diego baw. It is a waste to go through SD anyway, stay on 10 to LA them up 5.

That said I have made the trip from BR to Seattle several times in the dead of winter and I wouldn't think about adding the 600 miles through Cali unless there was a huge storm I would go the short route.

Up to Denton TX then off the interstate to Amarillo then to 70 outisde Denver (the roads are mostly desolate and 65mph except through the little towns). Then up to Denver and Laramie then over to Ogden UT (you go around SLC) then through Idaho and western OR to Seattle.

The direct route is a lot shorter and avoids more potential traffic snarls. The weather has to be pretty serious to make I-80 treacherous but it is easy to see with a long term weather forcast.

Going all the way over to Las Cruces to go up 25 is 200-300 miles longer than going through Dallas and Denver.
