I showed up for a work meeting hungover as a Sitting Bull. Owner of my company said, “You look rough. Were you with customers last night?”

I said, “No. church meeting.”

He just cussed and mumbled something about not liking being born Baptist.

3rd degree knight

Tuesday nights are rosary and meeting, usually followed by dominos.

We do meals on wheels the first Saturday of the month, 2 food drives at Wal-Mart during the year, spaghetti dinner, and numerous other charitable works.

We used to be involved in the local sports scene, but with such few young members that's not possible anymore. I often get frustrated about being the youngest active member, but they do a lot of good in the community and somebody has to carry that tradition forward.

Not Catholic, but I’ve been a member of the KISS army since the late 70s and that has been very fulfilling.

The new 4th degree blazer and beret look is awful.

We all wrote letters about them too.

Y’all ever do MR drives with tootsie rolls?

I remember one guy suggesting we change the name from MR to something else.

Thankfully we have several MD’s in our council and they quickly informed everyone “mental retardation” is the proper term.

We always raise 4 to 5k per a year for Soecial Olympics that way.

I get why they did it. The regalia is expensive and can be a prohibitive cost. I was able to find a tux at a reasonable price and have it altered for the degree ceremony. With that said, it had a distinctive look. When you saw them in full regalia as a color guard or in a parade, you knew instantly it was the Knights of Columbus.

Growing up I used to think tootsie rolls all had K of C shields on them. There's a book about the KofC in Louisiana that has a picture of my grandfather doing one of these drives.

If your Parish has a Men’s club I’d suggest joining that rather than the KC’s

I’m in the Men’s club at my parish...it’s a lot more fun than the KC’s
Fishing rodeo every year in Empire.. Skeet shooting contest every February
bus trip to the horse track every May
We actually raise more money for the Church and school each year than the KC’s do
Annual dues are only $25.00

Welcome to the Church brother. Hope your journey is fruitful and filled with blessings. I’ve been teaching RCIA since 2013 and love seeing the Holy Spirit work in the candidates and catatachumens. If I can answer questions I’d love to help.

What is the point of this? Why are there different levels to attain? What's different about each level?

i was for a few years. A friend of mine asked me to join so they could put me on the basketball team that played in the yearly tournament. It was fun, and we actually won our state division one year. I was also told by several members that if I wanted my kid to get into the school that was directly associated with the church and the council, that i needed to join. When he didn't get in, I lost interest. I have been inactive for a couple years now.

It’s been a great experience. Luckily our parish has a great RCIA program. They purposefully get group leaders that are from all walks of religious life, (i.e converts, cradle Catholics, former atheists and agnostics, people whose family has disowned them for converting, etc). I’ve enjoyed it and learned a lot and my biggest takeaway from the experience is that a lot of people who criticize the Catholic Church do not truly know what they’re talking about and are blinded by misconceptions. This was evident from my first RCIA class. I would call my folks after my classes (they’re Methodist) and get their thoughts on their understanding of certain aspects of the church and you could tell that they only based everything off of hearsay and news articles and didn’t care to truly read any teachings. It was just a testament to how sheltered I was to a different church all because of my upbringing, which is funny because they sent me to catholic high school. Anyway, I’ve really enjoyed it.

Edit: to be fair, I don’t agree with every tiny detail of the church, and I had some hangups, but I was offered a place to ask these questions and I was given answers. I highly recommend RCIA to anyone who has thought about joining. You can go through it without getting confirmed. It is a discernment period.

Benefits don't seem that great (at least in my case). I get better deals on insurance from my alumni association and I already get multiple newsletters and magazines I don't read.
