I lived in Hodges in Spring ‘89. I think the Hatcher dining fac was closed that semester because I remember having to walk to the Pentagon. I moved into West Stadium in fall ‘90 - again no A/C but single rooms. I honestly never remember being hot (or sober).

So basically that’s where all the Asians, Indians, and Euros lives?

Who in their right mind would have no AC in the late 90s? I’m all about making kids suffer through college living cheaply and I know you can study at the library, but hell even sleep and what not would be affected to a degree.

Honestly man, I wasn’t a Narc!!

I can honestly say my behavior was trashy, but it was very NOT “RA” type behavior.

I had a friend who started at LSU in 1982. At the time, all freshmen who didn’t come from Baton Rouge had to stay in the dorms. In 1982, they didn’t have enough dorm rooms. Therefore, he (and MANY other freshmen) had to stay at that motel down Nicholson (towards downtown) his freshman year - arranged for by LSU. He said it wasn’t too bad because they got maid service and room service. However, I couldn't imagine living down Nicholson in a motel for my freshman year. Power was a f*cking blast.

In 1983, they changed the policy and let freshman live in off-campus apartments without LSU's involvement.

Not only did Hatcher have A/C and a cafeteria, it also had a bar in the basement around the corner from the cafeteria. Spent a month living in the dorm before we realized there was a bar there.

Pitchers were $2.50-$3.00 and the popcorn was free.

Hell Yeah. Good times.

I thought KLSU was across the alley in the bottom of the stadium next to the laundromat?

I lived in Power during that time period. Our RA had his girlfriend practically living with him. Therefore, he wasn't about to turn any of us in for doing anything.

Power was originally a girls dorm which is why it was a little nicer. My RA was a tool. He was a former John Curtis football player. He kept his never-worn letter jacket in a dry cleaning bag in his closet and would take it out and show you if you asked. Or if you didn't.

IIRC Hatcher or Hodges had an actual bar in the basement called The Pub. Different times, man.

Hatcher 2nd floor was home Fall '84 - Spring '85 and had A/C. Cafeteria in basement. Most of the swim team lived on other end of the hall. We would get up at what we thought was early and they would be coming to breakfast after their morning workouts.

Also met Albert 'Joey' Belle for the first time in Hatcher Cafeteria. Many freshman non-football and basketball athletes lived in regular dorms in those days.

I think that's right. A/C in dorms was the exception not the rule until the 1990s, IIRC. I remember the basement (half-basement?) apartments of East Laville having A/C units, but the main part of East Laville and all of West Laville being unairconditioned. I don't think the Fieldhouse dorms had them.

Seems like Kirby Smith, and maybe the ones on Evangeline Circle had A/C. (ETA, oh yeah, Power Hall, it was nice back then.)

But, my memory is shot and that was 30 years ago, baw.

Isn’t Kirby Smith still standing? At least until next semester?

You're correct.

I don’t know if anyone is still living there, but it’s scheduled to come down in May 2020.

Several dorms to be torn down

I have no idea why someone would spend the money to go to college, but live in a dorm with no AC.

I wouldn't trade any of that time in no A/C Hodges and Pentagon over living in AC Hatcher with the douche bags or fighting for an elevator in Kirby Smith. With a box fan it was actually all bearable in Hodges and the Pentagon and quite pleasant October thru May.

Agree - lived in the penthouse ( 3 person room with only 2 of us ) in Hodges Fall 87-spring 88, it was awesome.

We had multiple fans running at all times - wind turbines up on that 4th floor.

RA lived 2 doors down , cool as shite!

I dont remember any more foreign students than anywhere else. I can tell you that they were the biggest dorm rooms until East Campus Apartments opened in 99. I stayed there that year.

Things were pretty lax in Highland Hall. The back door stayed cracked open, so you could bring anyone in the back without passing the RA. Hot, sweaty sex in that little dorm bed was pretty fun though, until you were finished.
