Yeah, I'd go with a mini excavator and use the blade in the front like a bulldozer.
Skid steer is more for earthwork, not clearing land.

If you have a lot of space I’d go with a backhoe but since it’s a Home a mini ex is probably what he needs.

It’s just an area beside my yard that’s grown up. It’s a good ways from my house and I’m out in the country...so I can get away with collateral damage.

Similar joystick controls but you'll have to use a third set of set of sticks/foot pedals to move forward/backwards/left/right (tracking).
They are somewhat more complicated to operate than a skid steer.
You can revolve the cab 360 degrees so that the blade on one end and the bucket on the other can be used in both forward and reverse.

If you have any experience running equipment, they are super easy to run, just remember to keep the bucket tilted up while your hauling butt going forward and don’t try to work on anything with much slope. A mini excavator is going to be better and cheaper for small clearing, you can dig up all the roots, pile stuff up and slick the dirt out with the blade.
