You get “whipped” for more than a few weeks and you will always be a bit injured. The first 8 months to a year is a steep learning curve.

I thought about it a little more and wanted to add that it's very similar to chess. You'll get into a position over and over, get your arse whipped, then eventually learn a new move to work out of there. Then the guy who's more advanced than you saw it coming, puts you in an even worse position for it and the arse kicking continues

I am 47. I have been doing jits for over 10 years and still get my arse whipped. We have plenty of over 40 guys so you will not be a unicorn in a class. The key at our age is to not push yourself too hard and be patient. BJJ can be very humbling.

I've been training 8 years and get my arse kicked on a regular basis.
There is always someone better than you are.

Go for it. Best cardio workout you can imagine, and if in a good gym your training partners will protect you while ripping your arms off.
My favorite Baton Rouge gym is Bayou Jiu Jitsu. It isnt as big as JM, but the instructor has deep Gracie family ties, and is really a top notch teacher and competitor. They have 2 locations, Airline and Old Hammond and Central. They have a lot of class options, so I can find a time to go most days.

I stepped in it one time at My Uncles farm.

Don't do it.
1) Jiu-Jitsu is gay. You are vigorously rubbing naked against other sweaty men.
2) Jiu-Jitsu MMA is trashy AF. Sure you can put the Gracie sticker on the back window of your Silverado next to the Salt Life one but chances are you pick up ring worm, MRSA or worse Herpes from the activities listed in #1.
3) Practice a gentleman's true martial art like Shotokan Karate, ITF TaeKwonDo, or find a kwoon and study Kung Fu if you want something more esoteric. All will help keep you in shape and be mentally challenging as well as culturally stimulating.
4) While not as classy as an asian martial art, boxing is still miles better and with a much richer history than MMA/Jiu-Jitsu.
5) MMA/JJ is the pitbull of the martial arts community.

I wonder why so many traditional martial artists trash BJJ? I'm beginning to think it is insecurity. Can't beat it, bash it.

Any grappling martial art is an insane workout. I thought I was in good shape and almost threw up on people in 3 minute rounds of Jiu-Jitsu.
If it interests you, give it a go. It will build a lot of cardio and functional strength.
Life's short, give it a go if you're interested.

He's not a martial artist, he's clearly a troll.

If you are a brittle 40 I would avoid it.

Stop making excuses and get your arse in to a gym and try it out. It just might be the best thing you've ever done for yourself.
