I will throw blue heelers out there. We have one and he is the best all around dot I’ve owned. Was a very alert dog but sadly is now 10 or 11 and frankly snoozes through people coming and going from time to time. Can say I blame him.

But when he was 2-9 years old he was always on duty.

If you need the best balance of family and guard dog, a Dutch Shepherd has become the most popular breed for that mix of needs.

My family had one when I was a little kid. Awesome dog, well trained, and was a deterrent to the trashy family next door.

Forgot to mention the dog didn't care for my father too much. The dog would go after the old man if my brother or I got the belt.

Pit bulls are the worst, but Chows are #2 on the list for biting children and innocent bystanders.

Not the dog for what he is looking for.

He wants a yard dog. A malanois it's a high energy working dog. If he just left it in the yard it would become an escape artist and not have any loyalty. Those did require b serious time.

He should get a rot or big mastiff.

Belgian Malanois..better than all the listed dogs combined

I have had one and agree. Smart. Protective. Can easily jump a 6 foot fence. Was shot once. Didn’t stop her. Make sure to train her well.

Definitely not for normal dog owners

They need tons of exercise and attention everyday. A bored Mal is like living with a terrorist in your house

I had an old Red Heeler with flat teeth. Yes, worn flat as in if he bit you it would not puncture but bruise only. He was very alert and ran at anyone trying to enter the yard but stop short of leaving the yard. He just protected his territory. UPS truck got him when he got out one day. He was a rescue and he may have already reached 15 years old when we got him. He loved to be near me when I worked on anything outside. He’d just sit and watch and come over for a scratch or two. RIP Milo!

I'm lucky enough to have this guy. Not specifically a guard dog, but a well trained dog that has quite a strong protective instinct, but smart enough to be a good family pet as well. He has the run of the house when we're not there. I feel like he is a pretty good deterrent - he's pretty visible for people that are in and around my neighborhood.

I have two German shepherds. Not attack trained, but my cousin that’s trains/sells attack dogs says one of them (female) is so adept she could be a kill dog in less than two weeks. Ironically, the other one (male) is the better guard dog patrolling property hourly and scaring away all intruders.

Both my dogs are highly trained, completely loving to family and friends (my baby, sisters toddlers, etc.), and have never had any issues. People will be afraid of you and your dogs. Any attempts to take your trained dogs to a social setting around normal people scared of your dogs and/ or untrained dogs that try to attack them will always result in blame towards your dogs. Raising and training dogs of these caliber take time and dedication. As above commentator mentioned, high energy; these dogs require constant attentions and stimulation. I love my dogs to death and they wait for me to come home to engage in daily exercises.

Despite all their training one of them is a dog felon for biting an idiot whose dog attacked my dog and said moron tried to reach his hand into a dog fight and got his hand nicked and called animal police like a soy boy.

would plan for this to be mostly an outside dog that we’d allow inside here and there.

Dogs are social creatures just like us, but even more so. Separating him/her from their pack(you) will lead to lots of problems. If you either don’t want a dog that’s going to be barking 24/7, trying to constantly escape, possibly attack you/your child or you don’t want to make a dog part of your family, then you shouldn’t get one.

Great Pyrenees.Laid back lazy dogs, gentle, great with children but heaven help anyone that messes with their family(people, sheep, goats). They can be pretty vicious in protection mode.
Only drawback, for me at least,is they have a lot of hair.

Several of these other breeds mentioned. (Belgian Malinois,Shepherds,Dobermans)
are for experienced owners that are able to give them a lot of training and exercise.

I’m sure this has been mentioned, but a malinois won’t be beat.

Having said that, they’re not a dog you get and just put outside and think it’s going to train itself.

They’re high energy, highly intelligent, and will tear your house up if they aren’t stimulated. They’re not for your average homeowner.
