Any Griddy users out there?

I'm about dying laughing. My neighbor made the big sales speech to me about how much better wholesale energy is over fixed rate. Then the poor baw sent me this gem around 5 when he got home today.
Said his charge for the past 3 days is close to $400. Anyone else out there getting big dicked by the snake oil salesmen of the wholesale energy world?

What the frick? Does he have every light on the house on and the air conditioner set at 65 and running the fan all day? Does he have his pool heater and jacuzzi turned on all day?

Its wholesale electric bullshite. Price fluctuates every 5-10 minutes. His average cost over the last 3 days was close to $2.75/kWh

That’s when I’d throw the breaker and take everyone out for ice cream.

I don’t get the appeal of griddy? I understand you’re supposed to save money but from the people I’ve talked to over the last year they’re averaging 8.5-9 cents a kWh.
I change companies every few months and my fixed rate has been 7-9.5. The 9.5 has just been recently since prices for contracts went up with it being summer
So I’m basically paying what griddy patrons have been averaging but not having to deal with the spikes and living in the stone age from 1-6 when the rates skyrocket. One of my neighbors bill for the month is already 300 and we’re only halfway through it

I know some Griddy customers.
Griddy is NOT for your average Joe or Jane. Griddy is perfect for a single person or working couple with no kids or pets who can shut off all appliances and a/c during the hottest days. If you can do that, you will save.
But if you keep your a/c on and run appliances over the super-peak hours in the hottest part of the summer you will get hosed.

You will need to be single AND turn off your breaker when you leave your home in the morning and don't return before 8pm, then you can turn on your breaker. By 6am your house should be cooled down to 74 degrees.

the people I know are single and have wifi controls for their thermostat and refrigerator and water heater.
They watch the market and shut down when prices are high. After the market stress has subsided (usually 7 or 8 pm) they go back to normal and after 9 or 10 pm they crank the A/C down to 65 because it's only 2 cents a killowatt/hr for them when it's 10 cents for flat rate customers.

Screw that. My electricity is $65/month right now in the peak of TX summer. Saving $20/month to deal with that BS is not worth it.

Like I said. In order to save with Griddy you have to actively participate and adjust your consumption. If you are disciplined, you can save but if not, just find a flat rate plan that suits you.

I still use a nest but why would someone go so out of their way to save a measly amount of money? Are some people saving $200/month for most of the year?

If you have Griddy, you are paying close to $2 per kw/hr right now.
I would turn off everything you can for this afternoon.

I've had Griddy since I moved to Houston two years ago. I live alone and work and travel a lot, so my usage is low when not home. Rates have always averaged to a pretty good all-in rate. This month is the first time I think i'll be on the wrong side of it.
My energy cost for all of July was $25 and so far in half the month of August it's showing $40.
Unfortunately, I'm in an apartment and can't install my own Nest or similar, so I just set the A/C to 82 or something when I'm gone but it'll still run a bit, and obviously the fridge/freezer runs.

See that's a scenario I can see working out with that kind of service. Not for my neighbor who have 2 kids and a 2 story house. They're peak use hours would be the opposite of what you would want for a plan like that.
Has anyone figured a reasonable battery charging solution yet? Talking about charging a bunch of battery cells while the price is at 2c/kWh and running the house during the day off those batteries.

so these people spend all day refreshing this app and let it control when they can turn back on their appliances?
Posted on 8/15/19 at 2:49 pm to Ed Osteen
Basically, if they don't want to pay a ton.
So right now power on the wholesale Texas grid is about $8000 per MWH.
That is about $8 per kwh. So a typical refrigerator will use about 4.5 kwh a day meaning that your cost for running just that appliance would be about $35 for one day. Of course that is assuming that the $8000 price holds up all 24 hours, which it won't.
