Doctor prescribed me Prilosec for heartburn issues. I don’t have pain or much discomfort but I clear my throat a lot. What’s worse is that I often get a hoarse voice after eating which makes conversations difficult.

I’ve tried improving my diet but cutting out all unhealthy foods (any refined carbs) and eating the right amount of calories isn’t helping.

I’ve read that Prilosec can be addictive and cause worse problems later on.

Any thoughts?

Have you had a scope? If not, I suggest it for piece of mind. How old are you?

I have been on it for 30 years. It is great. It shuts off whatever pump spews bile into your stomach and stops the burn. 20 MG/day for life. As far as addictive, you don’t turn into a meth head but your stomach will burn intensely if you don’t take it. There is a line of thought that you really need that stomach acid but no help on how to tolerate it. It also supposedly causes brittle bones and dimentia but has not hurt my posting skills any.

Do not try Nexium out of the gate. You do not need a prescription. You can get 42 generic Omeprazole at Kroger for $16 and they work just fine.

It’s probably the wrong word to use. After using it for a while, your stomach acid will be out of whack when you stop using it and may have worse heartburn after using it.

See that’s what I’m worried about.

I’m minimalist when it comes to medicine. I want to solve problems on my own.

But the hoarse voice is affecting my ability to contribute to my job or accomplish some social goals I have.

Your doctor prescribed something you can buy over the counter?

My doctor prescribed pantoprazole a couple months ago. I was getting heartburn almost every day. Even waking up with it. Miserable. Haven't felt shite since.

i prefer prilosec to nexium personally

try to cut back on alcohol. i have found the white claws give me less heartburn and acid reflux while still permitting me to get drunk

I was using Nexium for a while. It really did work but then I suddenly began developing a hiatal hernia so I stopped the nexium and it got better. That really goes against what should happen so maybe it was something else that improved the hernia. I cut out all carbonated drinks and only drink water. I drink vodka and water at night so that probably doesn’t help either. I should get back on it because I have really had a lot of throat clearing as well. Every single day, some days worse than others. Haven’t experienced the hoarseness issues though.

The hoarse voice could turn into esophageal cancer. There are exercises you can do to strengthen your vocal chords if necessary.

Take the medicine. Your voice may not project effectively if you do not.
